  • This will ever be known as the chateau of Josephine Baker. She had been a singer of international renown with an extraordinary career. Born in the States in 1906, she emigrated to France and became a citizen in 1937 when she married a Jew, but not before knowing the street life in America where she’d had to sleep in cardboard shelters and scavenge in garbage bins. For ten years she was the lead in the Folies Bergeres, and admired by all who saw her. Shirley Bassey once said, “I swear in all my life I have never seen, and probably never shall see again, such a spectacular singer and performer." During WWII She won the Croix de Guerre for her work with the French Resistance. When the Germans invaded France she moved to the chateau where she helped Belgian refugees and ultimately adopted 12 children. She was the first Afro-American to star in a major motion picture (Zouzou) and was the only female speaker in the civil rights march to Washington with Martin Luther King and was offered the lead in the movement when he was assassinated but she declined. When the builders refurbishing the chateau sent her almost broke, Grace Kelly, a close friend, offered her accommodation on the Riviera.

EXCELLENT ACCOMMODATION, SUPERB HOST

Exceptional one night stay, two rooms booked, both excellent, both good sizes, one room upgraded at no extra cost. Free wi-fi, tea and coffee making facilities in the room plus everything you could need. Alexandre is the perfect host, he know the business and it shows, nothing is too much trouble. We booked to eat at the hotel and were not disappointed, the food and service is first class, Alexandre is a top class chef and once again this really shows through in the quality of the food. Breakfast exceptional....... Highly recommended, we will certainly stay again, and cannot wait for the restaurant to open.........

Wir wurden von Alexandre freundlich empfangen und hatten ein wunderschönes Zimmer in einem schönen alten Haus. Alles war perfekt. - Das Restaurant war geschlossen, aber Alexandre hat nur für uns gekocht: sagenhaft gut! Am liebsten wären wir länger geblieben! Wer da übernachtet, sollte unbedingt bei Alexandre essen gehen!!

Tres bon rapport qualité prix. Chambre conforme aux photos publiées sur le site, confortable, chaleureuse à la déco sobre et soignée , et calme malgré la proximité de l'église. Hôte très accueillant, petit déjeuner très copieux. De plus nous avons diné au resto qui se trouve au rez-de-chaussée de l'hôtel. Alexandre le proprio des 2 établissements est un vrai chef. Il nous a fait voyager gastronomiquement parlant.

Un hôte attentionné dans un cadre calme

Alexandre est un hôte accueillant et attentionné. Grâce à ses conseils nous avons pu découvrir des lieux que nous n'avions pas envisagé (sans lui nous n'aurions pas connu le château de Biron qui est magnifique et assez peu fréquenté pour un mois de Juillet). La chambre où il nous a reçu pour la nuit était spacieuse avec une décoration recherchée, et le petit déjeuner copieux et varié. Si vous souhaitez visiter Monpazier, n'hésitez pas à faire quelques kilomètres de plus pour loger chez Alexandre.

Very nice hotel and an amazing host!

Alexandre was very welcoming and gave us plenty of great tips on what to do and what was nearby. He was always nearby with his little girls who were sweet and polite, and kept seeing how we were doing. The hotel was in good condition and looks like it has nice history which was nice to see. If you are on your way up to Bergerac airport and are staying here, ask for tips and directions to the large Chateau and the famous market (on Sundays) as they are en route. There isn't much to do in Castillonnes itself and only a few places to really eat so bear this in mind if you are after a food adventure. Unfortunately Alexandre's restaurant wasn't open due to awaiting spares for their oven/cooker so we went to a local place which was very good (La Marechalerie).

Le petit plus : la décoration raffinée de la chambre, avec beaucoup de petits objets. Manque peut-être la clim, mais il ne fait pas si souvent 36° dans la région !

Well located in the centre of the town

Extremely friendly and helpful proprietors. Alexander could not have done more to make us welcome. Spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Superb breakfast. Would not hesitate to recommend and look forward to staying again in the future.
