Ratchathewi Guide

About Ratchathewi

Ratchathewi is a downtown district of Bangkok located between the hustle and bustle of retail-filled Pratu Nam, and historic Dusit area. It is considered to be on the edge of Bangkok’s main tourist areas, which makes Ratchathewi a popular place for tourists to be based. Phaya Thai airport link station is not far away, and the local Sky Train station makes it easy to get to the Sukhumvit or Siam Square areas.

Don’t Miss

Several important landmarks are found within and close to the district of Ratchathewi.

One of the most significant attractions in the district is the Victory Monument. This impressive war memorial was built in 1942, and even though it is surrounded by major traffic day and night, it is still an interesting site to see. It was created to honour the fallen soldiers of the French-Thai War.

There are several tall towers worth ‘climbing’. The two tallest structures in Bangkok are found here – the Baiyoke Tower and Baiyoke Tower 2. Baiyoke 2 is the highest in Thailand, and contains a shopping mall, hotel and dining options for guests, with unrivalled views of beautiful Bangkok.

The small but stunning Suan Pakkad Palace is a complex of traditional Thai wooden houses that boasts many historical displays. Some of the Ban Chiang pottery dates back some 4,000 years. The compound’s eight Thai houses also provide visitors with an insight into the country’s unique and rich culture.

Restaurants and Bars

There are several hotels in and around Ratchathewi which offer visitors some great dining options. Most of these hotels have international menus, but some come at international prices. Nevertheless, the meals are worth the price. Of course, after the sun goes down, Ratchathewi and nearby Pratu Nam entice diners with a large range of street-side stalls offering everything from pad Thai to seafood dishes. There are several pubs along the main road, although they generally are relaxed social spots rather than all-night-dance venues.

Shopping

The Ratchathewi district is within a few minutes’ walk of Pratu Nam – one of Bangkok’s premier shopping areas. The Pratu Nam Market is definitely a great place to enjoy bargain hunting. Pantip Plaza and Platinum Shopping Mall are also found within Pratu Nam, so visitors can find an enormous range of cheap electronic items, clothing stores and accessories.
