The food was so bad. Almost every person in my group had food poisoning. The staff English is very poor. The main bathrooms in the hallway was smelly. No first aid….so bad resort and will never go there again

We had a good time at the resort overall, especially when it came to relaxing by the water. The property is very large, with plenty of space to swim in the pools or ocean and lots of room to lounge by the beach or poolside. The beach itself was excellent; the water was crystal clear and we were able to see plenty of fish very close to shore, which made swimming there a highlight of our stay. There is no shortage of activities, with options like tennis, pickleball, a bowling alley, go-karting, and a casino, and we also enjoyed the nightly live shows at the theater. On the downside, the whole property felt somewhat dated, especially the rooms. Even though the beds were advertised as queen size, our room had two twin beds, and when we requested a king, the only option offered was a ground-floor room, despite having paid for a superior category. Service around restaurant reservations was also frustrating: there was only one person handling bookings for the à la carte restaurants, which led to a very long line, and by the time it was our turn, there were no spots left for any night of our stay. The buffet food was very mediocre; over four days, not a single dish stood out or felt memorable. If your priority is simply to relax at a beautiful beach and enjoy the pools and you are not too concerned about food quality, you will likely not be disappointed here.

99% of the staff do not speak English. Half of Our group of 19 got food poisoning Open buffet; the food is recycled and clearly not fresh . Issues with the smell of the washroom of the lobby smelled like throw up. No proper first aid kit and no one to communicate with due to language barrier. The room was nice and clean The landscape and the beach are excellent.

Stayed Dec 21–29 and had an awesome week. Room was cleaned well every day and the whole place is super tidy. The beach is gorgeous - soft sand, clear water - and we ended up walking a ton because the resort is big but easy to get around. Pools were clean and never felt packed; plenty of chairs and a fun swim-up bar. Staff were friendly everywhere (check-in, restaurants, housekeeping). Lots of food options and the bar was well-stocked - good wine and solid spirits, not just the basics. We felt safe on the property and beach the whole time. Only heads-up: it’s a large complex, so expect some walking. Overall, excellent stay and great value -would happily come back :-)

Staff was very nice... kept place very clean. Lots of things to do. Nice beach with tons of palm trees for shade 😎... multiple buffets with good food. The restaurants were very delicious and staff very courteous. Would recommend for families or couples alike.

Room was great, staff great and resort was in in fantastic shape. The only real negative that will stop us from ever returning in the process of booking dinner reservations. We stayed at the Maya Tropically a year ago and this Christmas at Maya Colonial . Unless you are premium level the reservations are non existent and very hard to get us you want 9:30pm every night. Holding back Reservations for VIP guests is a very poor decision as many visitor like ourselves will not return. I will be writing an email to management in the Barceló corporation to discuss our dissatisfaction. Everyone just apologized but no one ever tried to help. We visit Mexico from Isla Mujieres to Tulum multiple times a year. There is other resort that we have visited that has such a short coming as Barcelo for booking dinner reservations. This is very unfortunate situation for the Barcelo chain to have these concerns.This needs immediate correction for guests

Beautiful resort with an abundance of activities that go into the late nights so you won't get bored. The beach was stunning, the pools were amazing, buffet and bar foods were suprisingly more than average. I've been at other all inclusive hotels and usually buffet is nothing special. Even the special restaurants were top notch food and didn't taste like the same stuff you'd get from the standard buffet, which sometimes they are from other hotels. So why the 2 stars dropped? Customer service and rooms. The hospitality and friendly demeanor is just not there. Not all, as I encountered some great staff, but sadly there were more lacking with that work ethic. The rooms are not well kept. Faucets, sinks and p-traps leak, the drains overflow, the vents are caught with dust, coverings on chairs and some paint peeling off, the tv is working but damaged screens. We had a major leak in our original room that was pouring out black mold and requested to move. The next room we moved into was cleaner and slightly more maintained. So it seems, this is random and we just had the unfortunate case of getting a bad room. TV still had damaged screen and the sink leaked at the edges. We were just careful not to let the water reach the overflow. So be prepared to get some hiccups and simply ask to move. We atleast did not receive any pushback from the concierge and our request was granted.

Our room was damp and moldy. We eventually got them to give us a better room for the last two nights of our stay. The sunrises were spectacular, the beach was wonderful. The food was descent. Booking anything with the hotel staff was challenging, everything took very long. I won’t go back there.

The rooms are too loud. It was around 1am and you can hear people outside our room talking loud and the room above us, we would constantly hear what sounded like a chair dragging on the floor. We arrived early and they didn’t try to accommodate an early check in. They just said we had to wait. So we waited and at 3pm, check in time, they said the room was still not ready. You would think that since they know we are there early our room would have been one of the first taken care of. After telling them, it was our 5th time being at the resort, you would think they would be thankful and even give you some sort of upgrade. But they don’t really care. The food at the buffets was okay, and the food at the grills was not the best. But the restaurants food was really good.

The rooms at this property have a bad odor, probably a combination of the high humidity and the resort itself is surrounded by trees, making it very damp. I think the Colonial might be the oldest in the group. The food had much to be desired, oddly the best meal I had was creating my own hamburger. The beach and pool areas where amazing. This resort is one of several on the same property, the Palace or Riviera might have been a better choice. This changed my option of an all inclusive resort, I think it might be better to choose a non-inclusive resort and have more control over what you can eat, the quality of the food, and the atmosphere. There isn't anything close to the resort so you would have to travel to get to other restaurants, bars, entertainment, etc. You do have the option to go to the other resorts on the property for some things, but we found it was more of the same. TIP: the surf is a bit rocky so either find a good spot or bring water shoes.

I loved 💜 the Angels and being around the staff reminded me of little Angels 👼. Very kind, very nice, and sweet. The Colonial is my favorite property so far that I’ve stayed at. Can’t wait to comeback in February.

Got bumped from the hotel I booked "colonial" to another hotel inside the same resort "beach" without any warning ahead of time. Also, no clear policy on how rooms get assigned, we arrived very early in the morning so even in the case of overbooking which is the hotel's fault, I should have had priority. The food and entertainment at beach was clearly inferior than colonial. The room itself was ok with some issues with the shower head but the cleaning staff are excellent. The only bright spot in the check in experience is that the "beach" hotel reception let us check in early

Wonderful resort for a family vacation! The staff was friendly and helpful, the rooms were current and clean, and the buffet had a great selection for adults and kids. The pools were well-maintained, and not too cold! Swimming with the turtles daily was a huge highlight. The resort is also close to several cenotes that you can visit. Many amenities to keep kids entertained, plus the great beach, will have us coming back.

First of all I have stayed here twice before and others Barcelo resorts. Always had a great experience. This time I arrived went to Barcelo Colonial and was informed at the desk I had been moved to Barcelo Beach. I was never even sent a email or called. I was given a ride to Barcelo Beach. There I checked in and was given my room number and key but couldn’t check in till 3. I waited two hours got rained on went to the room at 3 and couldn’t get in. The household staff was friendly and tried to help by letting me in. The room was occupied. I went down to the desk and got a manager to help me get a room. She passed me off to someone else by this time I was not at all please. The lady was nice enough and upgraded me to premium without the premium room. The trip was unsatisfactory to say the least. Won’t stay here again. Think twice before you do.
