Where to stay in Lisbon District

Baixa
Baixa combines elegant 18th-century architecture with the buzz of Lisbon's historic heart. Rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, its grand plazas and pedestrian shopping streets create a delightful setting for exploring Portugal's capital. The iconic Santa Justa Lift and wave-patterned mosaics of Rossio Square tell stories of the past. Wander the charming Rua Augusta to discover street performers and outdoor cafés. The area offers stunning views of the Tagus River from Commerce Square. With excellent metro connections and walkable streets, Baixa serves as an ideal base for experiencing Lisbon's historic charm.

Alfama
Alfama transports you to medieval Lisbon with its maze of narrow, winding streets that survived the 1755 earthquake. This historic district echoes with haunting melodies of Fado music drifting from intimate venues. The area reveals Portugal's soul at every turn. Castle of São Jorge crowns the hilltop with panoramic views while the Romanesque Lisbon Cathedral stands tall below. Colourful buildings adorned with traditional azulejo tiles create a photographer's paradise. Local life continues authentically as residents chat in doorways and hang laundry from windows.

Chiado
Chiado's elegant streets blend Lisbon's historic charm with artistic flair. This cultural hub features the iconic Café A Brasileira, 18th-century architecture, and the haunting ruins of Carmo Convent. The São Carlos National Theatre anchors a area once beloved by intellectuals and artists. Trendy boutiques and design shops line the cobblestone pathways. Metro stations make exploring easy, with the Tagus River visible from scenic viewpoints. Enjoy Portuguese cuisine in atmospheric cafés where the spirit of Lisbon's literary past meets its creative present.

Bairro Alto
Bairro Alto transforms from a charming historic quarter by day to Lisbon's premier nightlife district after dark. Sixteenth-century cobblestone streets wind past colourful buildings adorned with wrought-iron balconies and street art. Bohemian shops and quirky cafés create a creative daytime vibe perfect for wandering. When night falls, this historic area pulses with energy as bars, fado houses, and clubs open their doors. Traditional melodies drift from taverns where authentic Portuguese culture thrives. Metro stops like Elevador da Glória make exploring easy when your feet tire from the steep streets.

Príncipe Real
Príncipe Real stands as Lisbon's trendiest area where bohemian spirit meets upscale charm. Pastel-colored 19th-century mansions with ornate iron balconies line the cobblestone streets. The iconic garden showcases a magnificent 150-year-old cedar tree where locals gather. Designer boutiques and concept stores occupy restored palaces along Rua Dom Pedro V. The area balances Portuguese tradition with contemporary style through gourmet restaurants and craft cocktail bars. Easily explore Lisbon from the nearby metro stations while enjoying this sophisticated urban retreat.

ibis Styles Lisboa Aeroporto
"Nice hotel with very nice staff. Breakfast was excellent. Room was very clean. Having a restaurant that is open most of the day was helpful since we were killing time waiting on a late flight."

Holiday Inn Lisbon by IHG
"Hotel was decent maybe slightly dated rooms and shower over bath in our room."
Locke de Santa Joana
"Charming property. Love the grab and go breakfast options and it’s always warms the heart to stay here. It’s my second time."
Corinthia Lisbon
"We stayed for five nights. The hotel is in a very convenient location close to the Sete Rios station where there are buses, trains and metro. The best restaurant is a few meters down the sidewalk called Napolis for a quick bite and to mingle with neighbors and watch a match. The spa is nice and services there are professional in a top notch tranquil setting. The doormen and porters work hard to please. My husband left his jacket in the Evra bar and we got it returned to our room within a few minutes. The elevators are door key operated and the first time you use them you may need help as there are no traditional buttons for up, down, and floors. Once you get used to this you appreciate the efficiency of it. Daily housekeepers visit twice, to clean and then they leave you slippers and chocolate at the turn down visit. They are very generous with bottled water and coffee pods. I had to consult You-tube how to use the in room coffee maker. I crushed a few pods and had to figure out this European machine. This hotel does have face cloths (washcloths) Americans are accustomed to, but you must request them with housekeeping and repeatedly request them since all towels are washed daily. We ran out of room supplied shower gel- it’s always a good idea to pack your showering products. It was safe in the area and we enjoyed the hotel’s shuttle that took us into Lisbon where we explored the sights. I ate an incredible sushi plate at the garden restaurant which was very impressive. Nice!"
