Known locally as LoJo, Lower Johnson is one of Victoria’s darlings when it comes to shopping. The area was originally the home of hotels and illegal opium factories that supported immigrant life during British Columbia’s gold rush in the 1850s.
Take a walk along the street to admire the Victorian-era buildings painted different colours. Photographers will enjoy taking photos of the blue-and-yellow W.C. Cameron building, which dates to 1888. Also look for the Victoria Box and Paper Building, which remains part of Oriental Alley. The alley was one of Victoria’s historic secret passageways. Lower Johnson runs between Wharf Street and Government Street in downtown Victoria and is just a short walk from the Inner Harbour. Pay-and-display street parking is available along Johnson Street and public buses stop nearby.
