Website misleading, room looks big but in actuality it’s small. The toilet flush doesn’t work/flush properly. It’s very near the subway station, lots of restaurants, near the harbor view, all walking distance. I strongly suggest to have a list of restaurants, dimsum near the hotel that way foreign tourists know where to go. Overall it’s good 👍
This is a legendary building so it was cool to experience it. Was a bit shocking when I arrived but I got used to the peculiarities after a few days. Bottom floor has a lot of commotion and scammers and the elevator situation is very hectic. Rooms are very tiny but are decent in spite of size. Toilet has a curfew and needs to be manually flushed if not on the correct hours. Staff is very helpful and kind. Overall once I adjusted to the peculiarities I had a nice stay.
Room was very clean daily house keeping location is great Herat of the city staff very kind.

Liked: Amenities
The room is small, it’s common in Hong Kong, but it has everything we need. The front desk lady is super nice, she gave us many suggestions on sightseeings, transportation and dining places, which saved a lot of money for us. The location is unbeatable, only 10 mins walk to Victoria Harbor; local street food and restaurants just down the street.
Location is very nice. They clean my room every day. Staff is very helpful.

The Chungking Mansion is a third world trip. The Rhine Guesthouse is on the 13th floor and the small elevators are slow. The elevators are in an “arcade” of Indian restaurants and money changers. It’s a gritty place, the rooms are small and spartan. The staff, though, was very nice and helpful, the rooms are clean and you are probably in the best spot in Kowloon for sightseeing.
They tried to add $50hkd extra charges a day for cleaning of room, plus $45hkd taxes. After 45 minutes of haggling they made us just pay the $45hkd 'taxes'. Felt like a full on scam as we had a baby with us and needed somewhere to stay. Room was clean and small but building is old and full of dodgy characters. Be very careful booking here, the price on Expedia is not the price they will charge you at the place.
The reality is that this place is the cheapest that you are going to find in Hong Kong, but it's cheap for a reason.
Pros:
- Good location. There is a tube station across the road and lots of shops and restaurants around it.
- Very affordable
- The staff were generally really friendly
Cons:
- I saw maybe one cockroach a day (although I have saw cockroaches in a lot of places I've stayed in Asia - even big new fancy high-rise buildings). I did see a rat in the stairwell to the building though which was a little more shocking.
- The Wifi was great when it worked, but would cut out every 30 minutes or so and just not connect.
- The room is very small. Fortunately they gave me a room with two beds so I had somewhere to put my suitcase.
- There are two lifts for the whole building (which contains guestrooms and homes). At peak times, you may have to wait 5 or so minutes to get into the lift.
A lot of the guest houses in this building appear to be managed by the same people from what I could see, so if you're happy with the above, I would suggest just booking the cheapest. They're all about the same price but some do work out a little cheaper.
This building has a bit of a legendary status in HK (for both good and bad reasons). I heard that it used to be ran by the Triads, and if I said to anyone that I'm staying in TST and "it's not the greatest", they would ask if I was staying in Chunking Mansion. Some may like experiencing this historical building.
We had a wonderful stay. Room was clean and comfortable. Staff were very helpful and accommodating. Excellent location. Will definitely stay again in the future.
