About Harajuku
Harajuku is a renowned teenager-hangout, although it is certainly one of the best places in Tokyo for tourists to check out too. Japanese teenage subculture is rampant here, especially at the famous Yoyogi Park. In addition to this fascinating green space, Harajuku is also popular for its beautiful shrines. Visiting this district on the weekends, especially on Sundays, is an absolute must.
Don’t MissYoyogi Park is a large public park located at the heart of Harajuku. Every Sunday, a host of teenage groups flock to the park, showcasing their strange yet interesting fashion trends. The Gothic Lolita groups and greaser gangs are among the most fascinating groups. The park is also a fun place to enjoy a picnic or explore by bike or on foot. The cherry blossom season sees many thousands of visitors come here to enjoy the flowers.
The largest and most-visited shrine in Harajuku is Meiji Jingu Shrine. It was first built in 1920. Even though it is simple in design, the shrine still boasts an incredibly tranquil atmosphere. There is a beautiful torii gate at the entrance and a pristine winding path leading to the place of worship.
Restaurants and barsHarajuku is one of the best areas of Tokyo for Western and Indian restaurants. Pizzas, kebabs, sandwiches, hamburgers, and all-day American breakfasts are commonplace here. The district is also synonymous with its sweet crepe snacks, especially along Takeshita-dori. Even though these snacks can be extremely sweet, they are always a great option for a quick treat. Nightlife in Harajuku is relatively subdued, although there are several cafés and pubs that serve alcoholic beverages.
ShoppingHarajuku is not renowned for its shopping culture, but there are several shopping facilities available here. The Harajuku-SoLaDo is the most modern shopping centre, boasting more than a dozen contemporary clothing stores. Another chic department store is Omotesando Hills with a huge range of clothing stores and restaurants to choose from. The Oriental Bazaar is the perfect place to find a bargain. It has everything from cheap fashions to typical Japanese souvenirs on display.
