This iconic suspension bridge offers views of the Statue of Liberty from the East River.

As one of the oldest and longest suspension bridges in North America, the Brooklyn Bridge has long been an icon of progress for New Yorkers. Spanning almost 1600 feet (487.7 metres), the bridge crosses the East River and connects Lower Manhattan with Brooklyn. The bridge features six lanes for automobiles and two lanes dedicated to pedestrians and cyclists, and carries more than 120,000 people daily. The Brooklyn Bridge has long been a destination for tourists, and today visitors flock to the bridge for stunning views up the East River, and for the history linked to the bridge.

Walk the bridge at sunset for one of the most unique views in the city. From the centre of the Brooklyn Bridge, visitors have the opportunity to see in both directions along the East River. Look across to the Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridges to the north, or down to the Upper Bay in the south. On a clear day, visitors to the Brooklyn Bridge can see the Statue of Liberty in the distance. Visit the bridge at sunset for the most rewarding view, although be prepared for crowds.

There are a number of walking tours of the bridge, and this is an excellent way to discover its history. Learn about the architecture and construction process, the infamous Brooklyn Bridge jumpers and the first flight to pass under the bridge. Walking tours cross the bridge in approximately an hour, giving you time to take in the sights, hear the stories, and make your way along the often crowded footpath.

The Brooklyn Bridge is located at the southern end of the East River, and can be reached on foot from DUMBO and Lower Manhattan. Visitors travelling by train can reach the bridge via the City Hall or Chambers subway stations in Manhattan, or the York Street and High Street subway stations in Brooklyn. The bridge can be visited daily, and there is no fee.
