Banglamphu Guide

About Banglamphu

Banglamphu is a fascinating district situated immediately east of Bangkok’s historic Rattanakosin area. As a result, this neighbourhood and the encompassing streets boast a wide selection of historic architecture. Nevertheless, Banglamphu is nowadays more famous for its unrivalled backpacker scene, as the world-famous Khao San strip can be found here.

Don’t Miss

Tourists will feel a real sense of adventure when basing themselves at Banglamphu. There is a vast array of attractions within walking distance of this neighbourhood.

Khao San Road, the renowned budget-traveller haven, is more than just a busy street with cheap accommodation. It boasts its own unique culture, one that should be experienced by all tourists. There are plenty of cafés resting along the street, so visitors can simply sit, enjoy a coffee, and watch Khao San pass by.

There are many exquisite temples located in and around the district, some of which are the most famous in Thailand. Wat Saket and the beautiful Golden Mount are close by, and the unique Loha Praset, with its many metal spires, can be easily reached on foot. Of course, Wat Suthat and its famous Giant Swing is just five minutes’ walk from the streets of Banglamphu.

Plenty of history awaits visitors here. Tourists are advised to leave the map, and simply take a walk through the streets of Banglamphu. Many shophouses and structures have been here for decades, and the recent gentrification trends within the district have created a real charm not seen elsewhere in the city of Bangkok.

Restaurants and Bars

Khao San Road is home to many hotels and inns which generally offer restaurant or café dining options. Even though the inns themselves are basic, the menus tend to be very appetising. Most cater for both Thai and Western tastes. Street stalls are popular throughout Banglamphu, with many traditional noodle and rice dishes on offer, such as pad si ew and khao moo daeng. Fried insects and Thai dessert stalls also populate the streets here. The best places for a drink are the cafés along Khao San Road.

Shopping

Market-style shopping is available throughout Banglamphu. The shops and stalls along Khao San and adjacent roads are the most popular shopping spots in the area. Tourists can find a huge range of items here, handicrafts, clothes and accessories.
