The Plaza Miguel Hidalgo is a wide-open square at the heart of the pretty colonial town of Tequisquiapan. Spend some time soaking up the atmosphere, meeting the friendly locals and taking in the sights and the impressive architecture.

Amid the bougainvillea-lined streets, brightly colored colonial buildings and bustling markets sits Plaza Miguel Hidalgo. Head to the plaza to unwind and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of the town. Relax in one of the many cafés or enjoy a late lunch in the numerous restaurants which can be found here. Take the chance to sample some tasty and traditional Mexican fare.

The square is surrounded by arcades known as “portales,” and is overlooked by the unmistakable La Parroquia de Santa María de la Asunción. This church stands as the centerpiece of the town and is a must-see on any visit. It has a pink, neoclassical façade and two smooth columns topped by a triangular pediment. Visit any day of the week, from early in the morning until well into the evening.

The town’s residents come to the plaza to sip coffee, chat and relax under the shade of the trees. Watch dog walkers exercising their four-legged friends, children playing and couples walking hand in hand. There is also a good chance of catching musicians playing a set, which often attracts large crowds.

In addition to the cafés and restaurants, find numerous artisan stores in Plaza Miguel Hidalgo. Peruse the little stores which are tucked away behind the terracotta-colored arches and talk with local craftspeople who will explain more about their pieces and the traditions behind them. It is a good place to pick up souvenirs and mementoes to take back home.

Plaza Miguel Hidalgo is in the middle of the town of Tequisquiapan and is unmissable. Ask any local to point you in the right direction. Tequisquiapan is some 43 miles (70 kilometers) east of Querétaro and is well served by long-distance buses.
