My wife and I got an upgrade to help celebrate our anniversary. The inn keeper was extremely pleasant and could not do enough for us. The family atmosphere breakfast was just an added bonus. We will be going back. 10 out of 10.

The staff were so pleasant to talk to and since my wife and I were not able to climb stairs, we were upgraded to a first floor room. The breakfast served every day was so delicious and ready when we were. Everything we needed was taken care of by wonderful people. Also all the attractions are within walking distance since the hotel is located downtown. I highly recommend the Melville House and we will be staying there again.

We got an updrade to a different house. I really like staying in an old inn rather than a hotel. My only complaint is the mattress was not comfortable. Which ultimately becomes a deal breaker. My lower back was in pain for 2 days after my stay. The location is great. My husband forgot is shirt and jacket and we were a 2 minute walk from The Gap and Jos. A Bank. We walked to breakfast in the morning so nice and close to Broadway and Thames St.

Super nice staff. Got a free upgrade for my anniversary. Old homes so don’t expect crazy amenities, but the managers knowledge of the area, friendliness and hospitality make this place a must-visit. I would highly recommend and will not book with anyone else if I were to visit Newport again

I knew this was a historical building prior to the trip. I was thinking quaint b&b but after seeing the property, I realized that was not an accurate description. The best part of this property was it was very inexpensive compared to others in the area and it is in a very great location. I booked the Melville house and upon arriving our room was not ready because we arrived early, which was fine and we were certainly willing to wait. However the lady at the front desk offered another room and explained to us that the room we booked did not have a television and that the bathroom was extremely small. The room we were offered was in a building next-door. I am thankful we were offered another room because the Melville house was extremely old and had a bad smell on the inside. However, the other room was also in a building that was pretty rundown on the inside. Additionally, the room we were given also did not have a television and had a very small bathroom as well. I figured that a TV was a standard amenity in a hotel room and not something I would need to check a listing to make sure would be available. Also, there is a skylight above the bed in the room we were given so if you have any intention of sleeping late, it’s definitely going to ruin that plan for you. Overall, it was just not the type of experience that I would expect from any hotel. No ice machine, no places to charge your electronics, and just overall very old and not functional.
