"This hotel is central to everywhere we want to go in SF! Plus, we feel safe in this neighbourhood. We love the atmosphere at Union Square, and BART is close by for our trips out to the suburbs. The staff are always friendly and helpful. Our room was nice and clean, and our room requests were met 100%. We have stayed at the Handlery many times over the years, and will stay here again! Thank you!"

"The carpets were dirty, black mold in the showers, the mattresses were cheap and uncomfortable, the elevator is slow, small and usually occupied. Took the stairs to the 5th floor and down most of the time. Aside from that, its good place to stay for a night or two on a budget. Parking is secured in a gated lot next to the hotel for $32-40 per night. Walking distance to good eateries. Recommend food within walking distance: Cafe Buenos Aires on Polk st. for their variety of fresh empanadas and desserts, fruit fruit smoothies and hot mushroom drinks and matcha. Then to have the stews/soups and other chinese foods at Hai Ki Mi Gia on Ellis. Both eateries keep a very clean place and presentation of food, on top of the food tasting delicious."

"Nice clean hotel with good size rooms in an excellent location near Union Square. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The only down side was the breakfast - the hotel kitchen and dining area are being refurbished and hence the usual full breakfast could not be offered."

"Excellent city view (worth the price). Great location on Nob Hill. Ideal for family stay. Extortion pricing in the lobby machines and mini-store (($8.00 for a 4 oz. bottle of Pepto-Bismal, $10.60 for one bottle of cold beer!!). Just do your shopping in the surrounding shops..."

"Being a boutique hotel, I try to be very aware of how things are done here. It's an old building so obviously, things will be old too. In the bathroom, there were multiple little flies in there and we even found a dead cockroach in the drawers. It wasn't even worth noting because we were leaving soo anyways but it left a bad taste. Our key cards stopped working mid trip as well. "

"This is a solid option for being in the heart of SF without paying the exhorbitant prices of nearby chain hotels. I would stay here again. Safe, easy access, and friendly staff. It is smallish, older, but if you need a place to stay that won't break the bank. This is a place to consider."

"The King George Hotel is an older hotel and is perhaps best described as in the style of an older European pension. Room was exceptionally clean; overall I found the hotel absolutely charming with spacious lobby and bar (open 4p-10p except Thursdays and Fridays); very steep circular steps at front and back; one small elevator. Be advised that deluxe rooms have air conditioning; standard rooms do not. If you want a refrigerator, request it right away as it's not automatic in the room (same with a fan). I was in 809, at the end of the hallway, a charming standard queen, and I happened to be there during an unusually hot period with city heat advisory -- in March 2026! Room was always very warm, but I got air circulating with propping open the door, opening the window, and having the fans go. Ceiling fan worked well. Note that this is not a complaint, but just an advisory for others who may read this and may expect something else. Also nearby are excellent food options (including 24 hour diner on weekends). I was there for a conference, and the King George was only around the corner from the conference hotels, whose conference rates were triple what I paid for the King George. Trader Joe's is in easy walking distance. People were great, shout-out to maintenance and housekeeping staff and to Jayson the bartender. The first floor lobby area and bar area, with TVs, plugs, tables, chairs, etc., was wonderful (but no air circulation). Free coffee and pastry in the morning too! "
