Icefields Parkway

Icefields Parkway
This is one of North America’s most awe-inspiring journeys. Snow-capped mountains, waterfalls and glaciers are a few of the wonders you’ll see along the way.

Icefields Parkway, also known as Highway 93, runs through the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks. The Parks are classed as a world heritage site because of their pristine beauty and on the Icefields Parkway you get to see the best of it during one epic journey. En route, you’ll get to see lakes, glaciers, and peaks and you can get involved in several outdoor activities.

Grab your camera, binoculars and hiking boots and embark on the  144-mile (232-kilometre) road trip from Jasper to Banff. It’s possible to do a day-long organised trip along Icefields Parkway by bus. Rent a car if you want to see everything at your own pace. You can spend a few nights in a mountain resort or camp along the way.

Starting from the town of Jasper, the first leg of Icefields Parkway plies through the rugged charm of Jasper National Park. From here, you’ll head to the vast Columbia Icefield. Stop for a few hours to enjoy a trip over the Athabasca Glacier.

On your way again, you’ll pass the Bow Summit. Stop for a while at the Saskatchewan River Crossing, where three rivers collide. Take in this breathtaking natural display before heading to Peyto Lake. Walk the paved trail for the best views over the emerald lake, it is stunning!

Stay for a night or two at Lake Louise and go skiing or snowboarding. When you continue on your road trip, you can admire the rugged Castle Mountain or stop at Vermillion Lakes to get a photo of Mount Rundle reflected in its waters.

Once you’ve reached Banff, board the gondola for a ride to the top of Sulphur Mountain and enjoy panoramic views of Banff National Park.

Before you set out, it is recommended that you visit the official website for all road and safety reports. Also check which permits you may require and what to do when you encounter grizzly bear.

Icefields Parkway is at its busiest between July and August. Because snow is common year round, check the conditions to see if you’ll need snow chains.

It’s nice to see Athabaska ice field glaciers, but we all people are contributing to destroying our natural resources.
