Sathorn Travel Guide

About Sathorn

Bangkok’s version of Wall Street, Sathorn is home to numerous corporate offices, especially those in the finance and banking industry. It stretches east from the Chao Phraya River to Rama IV Road, and is bounded by Sathorn Tai Road to the north and Thanon Chan to the south. The district was named after Sathorn Road and the Sathorn canal, previously used for public transportation. Today, Sathorn is served by the BTS, MRT and the Chao Phraya Express Boat, and is home to the Saphan Taksin and Surasak BTS stations, Lumphini and Khlong Toei MRT stations and CEN-Sathorn boat pier.

Don’t Miss

Sathorn is an eclectic area of the city, with a mixture of cultures and religions, as well as traditional and modern architecture.

For the cultural character of Sathorn visit; Assumption Cathedral, Wat Witsanu Hindu Temple, Wat Phai Ngoen Chotana Ram, and Wat Yannawa and Wat Don – two ancient temples with a unique style of architecture. Kathmandu Photo Gallery, M.R. Kukrit's Heritage Home and Sathorn Mansion are also well worth checking out.

If you enjoy being outdoors and can handle the humidity try these; boating or cycling in Lumphini Park, or having a picnic under one of the park’s trees. If you are a foodie and enjoy walking try the Taste of Thailand Walking Tour or Historic Bangrak Food Tasting and Culture Tour. One of the most notable sites in Sathorn is ASIATIQUE The Riverfront. Here, you can ride a Ferris Wheel, shop, dine and go to the theatre, all under one roof!

Restaurants and Bars

Eating and drinking is extremely satisfying in Sathorn as it has a great mix of cheap street food and extravagant fine-dining. Plus, there are numerous fantastic rooftop bars, like Sky Bar at the Lebua on the riverfront, which is one of the highest bars in the world. Moon Bar at the Banyan Tree Bangkok is also a must, and is often pegged as one of the top 10 rooftop bars in the world.

Shopping

ASIATIQUE The Riverfront is the main tourist mall in Sathorn, but for a truly Thai experience, walk along the back roads throughout the district to find small street markets and local shops, especially in the early evening. For discounted name brands, the Bangkok Fashion Outlet is a good choice.
