Arrived early around 1pm wanting to leave luggage, no one at the lobby. Had to call the staff via the lobby phone, but surprisingly all I got was an abrupt “pm 3 checkup” answer, with no greetings at all. Bad 1st impression. But when we came back to checkin later the staff was friendly (especially the older guy) and professional. The dinner spread was (as ryokan dinner goes) good. Food was tasty but not great. The public bath was plain, although big enough. The in-room wooden spa was small but nice. The room is nice. Great to be greeted with Onsen Eggs and a bonus to have in-room coffee grinder. Within minutes’ drive away from the Beppu Thermal Sand Bath by the Beach (must try!). 1st impression of the decor was it seems a bit plain but on closer look the place is filled with rabbit stuff. Not a great ryokan stay but good enough.
Yes there is a curfew at 10pm but it's not unreasonable. But this is something you learn when you check in. Beppu isn't a big city, nor is this a big hotel where you can come in and out wherever you want. This is a family run business ryokan. Staff was friendly who reminded us check in was at 3pm even though we arrived early. We simply drove into town for lunch and came back. There's nothing you really need to do beyond 10pm, no one needs to race home if you just plan accordingly for the day. I think it's ridiculous people think they can apply their own rules and expectations when you're going to a place like this. The ryokan is beautiful. The rooms are lovely with your own wooden bath in each room that is is semi outdoor. I love their toilets with all the seating warming/bidet functions. The traditional dinner and breakfast were amazing, I worried about not having enough to eat but that certainly was not a problem. I have tattoos but went into the public onsen at night so it wouldn't potentially bother other customers who are not comfortable. When we left, one of the staff was so attentive and didn't leave until we were drove safely away.
Puolihoidossa alkoholijuomat maksavat (kohtuullisesti) erikseen.
