The hotel advertises itself as the reconstruction of a Chinese home, which is what it is. It has done an excellent job of creating a heritage hotel and has won many awards. They are deserved. Lots of wood, lots of classic ornamentation, lots of flowers. The room I had was decorated in fully Chinese form: windows with wooden shutters, glass plate, and red curtains. Chinese rugs on the floor. Comfortable bed with pillows in Chinese fabrics. The lighting was subdued, coming from elegant, classic chandeliers. Great of ambience but could prove a problem if one expected to do a lot of reading late at night. I didn't ask, but my guess is that if a guest wanted more lights, the staff would provide them, for the staff was excellent in accommodating special requests. Lester, at the front desk, and Angie, who seemed to work in both the elegant restaurant as well as the hotel, were the two I met most often and they were superbly helpful. Lester gave excellent suggestions for places to eat, to visit, to shop -- all according to one's wishes -- in a city which has immense variety of choice.
Hotel fittings and features were good and matched the heritage of the site. Quite a unique stay and I would have scored higher except for the ancient towels that were provided, and the low quality breakfast provided. I would have expected better for a hotel charging half the rate of 1881.
Et skønt hotel, med god balance mellem gammelt/antikt og komfort. Meget sødt og hjælpsomt personale. De serverer let morgenmad, selv om det i beskrivelsen står at værelse er uden morgenmad. Her vil jeg meget gerne bo igen. Ligger midt i centrum.

Mosquitos !
Hotel stuff are very helpful and professional.
However, there are many mosquitos in the room and hotel which made our stay quite unpleasant. Just imagine, we have to apply Mosquitos repellent and stick ourselves with mosquito patches before we can go to bed. Despite this, each one of us especially the kids has 6 to 11 bites all over their hands and legs.
Stay is good and worth for value. Old heritage building. Staff is friendly. Recommend for short stay.

Great location near the Penang Heritage area
The location of the hotel is fantastic if you wish to stay in town, and in particular near the heritage zone. Being a heritage hotel, it is difficult from the standard hotel chain. The room is spacious and could fit an extra bed comfortably. The only thing we suspect is that the extra bed is not clean as my child had bites all over his body. My hubby who slept on the extra bed also had the bites
It's a beautiful hotel, great deco and convenient location but really noisy and the front desk don't have enough touristic info

Substantial character needs more room cleanliness
We enjoyed the hotel for its cultural charm and location. However, we did not enjoy the soiled bedding with stains and hair and the bathroom towels that were also soiled. No doubt the hotel gets high marks for its preservation efforts. Staff were good too. However, as a frequent traveler, not so certain the "star" rating is deserved.
Friendly staff, very helpful providing and fulfilling any request.

typical chinese mansion
The spring in the lobby is noisy during the night. No breakfast served in the hotel: a little disappointing!.Very kind staff trying to help as much as they can.
The hotel fulfilled all our expectations. The only fault we found was the noise at night, not the hotels fault, but we were glad we did not have a room at the front overlooking the road. The staff were very helpful, and welcoming. We had hoped to stay in a genuine chinese heritage hotel, and that was exactly what we got. Thank you hotels.com and the1881.
This hotel offered a lovely stay for myself and my husband. The room, which included an outdoor bath, was thoughtfully decorated. The location for a visitor who wishes to wander Georgetown couldn't be beat. One thing, I would probably not stay here with young children, as the rooms open to a courtyard and the restaurant on the ground level and at night could be quite loud. For our purposes, it was perfect.
