With local artisanal produce on the table and wooded mountains on the doorstep, this San Francisco Bay county combines a laid-back lifestyle with natural splendour.

Explore fertile valleys sheltered by pine-studded ridges or clamber across craggy headlands to look out over pristine seashores in Marin County. As a neighbor to San Francisco and the wine-growing regions of Napa and Sonoma, Marin County is perfectly positioned for an exciting getaway. Visit gorgeous beaches, protected parklands and panoramic water views when you explore Marin County’s extensive coastline. Recline at a retreat in the county’s gently rolling interior and savor superb local produce grown in the surrounding farmlands.

The county’s seat is San Rafael, a bayside city named for its historic mission church. Check out the city’s Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Marin County Civic Center and stroll along the foreshore trails of its beachside parks. To the south of San Rafael are the densely wooded canyons that shelter the city of Mill Valley. Hike or cycle along the city’s Richardson Bay shores and visit the Muir Woods National Monument. This breathtaking tract of old-growth coast redwoods has a network of walking and cycling trails. Explore the surrounding Mount Tamalpais State Park to experience the high-octane trails of the birthplace of mountain biking or head to the sandy shores and surf breaks of Muir Beach.

Visit neighboring cities of Tiburon and Sausalito to experience gorgeous Richardson Bay waterfront precincts. Depart on a boat tour and enjoy pretty water views as you sail around the peninsula and nearby Angel Island. Sausalito is also your last stop in Marin County before reaching the Golden Gate Bridge. Explore the north bank’s Golden Gate National Recreation Area to find hiking trails and spectacular lookouts. Check out Fort Baker or walk to the island-studded coastline of Marin Headlands.

Head west to reach the wide expanse of Point Reyes National Seashore. This protected coastal park is perfect for spotting wildlife. Nearby Drakes, Limantour and Heart’s Desire beaches are great for swimming. The North Coast is renowned for its rolling countryside and wineries.

Fly into San Francisco International Airport and reach most parts of Marin County within 90 minutes’ drive. The area has a selection of scenic railways, as well as intercity buses. Relax by the ocean at a waterfront hotel or experience Marin County’s rustic beauty from a country getaway.
