A well maintained beautiful classic traditional Japanese ryokan, the service is on the top notch. Everything is perfectly presented. We had a great time staying at the ryokan.
Excellent staff
Great room cleanness and condition, Taking into account of its 300 years history
Fair price for the add-on dinner for a japanese dinner
Visited this hotel for two night, different dinner each night
Good place to stay when you visit Zao for Onsen and snowsport!
Excellent onsen with relatively high temperature (~50 degree celcius)
Vintage design and appearance, stairs (~20-30 steps) in front of main entrance, shuttle car to bus station available
Superb food provided with decent services !
We had an amazing time! The room was a mixture of contemporary and traditional style and it was so beautiful. We enjoyed the high quality Onsen and dinner. Can’t ask more.
My boyfriend and I had an incredible stay at this ryokan in January of 2025. The property was very beautiful and well maintained! The onsen were excellent as well, once you got the hang of onsen etiquette. The ryokan is also situated near the base of Zao ski resort so you can walk over there for a day of skiing followed by a nice warm soak in the onsen! Additionally the breakfast and dinner experiences were incredible, everything was delicious and my boyfriend's food allergies were taken into account, and there was always an alternative for him (i.e., shrimp was replaced with fish). Can't recommend staying here enough, it was an incredible experience.

This is a beautiful old facility. Taxi or bus from train station. An uphill walk from bus station or about $50 taxi. We visitors in January. Icy steps! The staff was great to carry luggage up to room!
Chucky was so nice and helpful. Ask to see his photos from his hometown!
Even with our limited Japanese skills, the staff understood and communicated with us with great ease. Everyone was extremely nice, polite and pleasant. The breakfast and dinner menus were copious, delicious and made with local ingredients. Even a simple tomato could shine with the incredible skills of the chef.
Zao onsen has a reputation as a winter resort but we've thoroughly enjoyed hiking the mountain in summer to come back to warm smiles, relaxing sulfuric waters (really helped my skin) and incredible food.
Excellent service, food, amenities, and atmosphere. We stayed for 5 nights and each dinner and breakfast was delicious.
The ski lift is walkable from the ryokan, but be prepared for a nice hike uphill. We did it with not that much snow on the ground, so I don't know how difficult it would be with ice or compacted snow.
The hotel has a shuttle to pick you up at the main bus stop. I'd recommend sending your bags ahead of you.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service, amenities
The Onsen/hot mineral baths were terrific and well laid out. The staff was polite and welcoming. With more foreign tourism Japanese hotels need better prepared English speakers; the staff here had no one really fluent in English. This was especially bad in the restaurant. Also, unless you are an adventurous foodie, I don’t recommend getting half board. Too much food (courses) at dinner and very very traditional Japanese. Breakfast is also traditional Japanese. If this is not to your liking eat elsewhere.
The building is beautiful, the room are luxurious and the meals and excellent and have a light feel to them (note relatively early last dinner time at 1830). The coffee machine in the lobby is a nice touch, too, and serves good coffee. The hot springs are all different and the curtain changes every day (at midnight) so you can do one set in the evening and one set in the morning. Good wifi and a nice lobby area. The downside is that the indoor-only bath downstairs is “paired” with a very hot outdoor onsen upstairs, so half of the time it is almost impossible to enjoy the waters. The other half has reasonable offering both downstairs and upstairs. If only curtains worked differently (indoor only downstairs were paired with stone bath upstairs) one could enjoy the hot springs a lot more.
I thought the maintenance of the hundred years old building was kept very clean, up-to-date, and neat. We enjoyed our stay, and especially the longevity onsen soup/water was comforting, smooth, and healing. They provided excellent care for us during the stay, the meals were scrumptious, and the drinks were great! I would revisit Takamiya Ryokan Miyamaso!
