Arrived to the property at night and was too scared to enter. Decided to spend the night else where. Owner refused to refund my money.

I received a call from Expedia after check-in time for a refund. I refused since it was a holiday weekend and outside of the guidelines for refunds. Myself and other guests were at the property all night. If you did show up I am not sure why you were "too scared to enter"? There was also no direct communication with the guest. Not sure what the real issue was.

We really enjoyed our stay at this beautiful and historic house. It is located in an extremely quiet area and within comfortable distance from Albany, Saratoga and Lake George. The interior of the house is very tastefully decorated and furnished with antiques throughout. Our stay at the Oakcliff Bed and Breakfast was like stepping back in time, while still keeping all the modern comforts. John and Pam are excellent hosts. They made us feel very welcome. Also, the views of the Mohawk River from behind the house are spectacular.

Thank you for your kind review. Yes, the Saratoga Room was created for those who wanted the benefit of staying in a 5 star bed and breakfast at a budget price. May I suggest for a larger room you book the Mohawk or President Grant next time. The cost is a bit more but worth it!

Pleasant Stay
My wife and I went to the Tug Boat Rally in Waterford. We took a chance at a bed and breakfast and pick Oakcliff. Great experience! House is a restored from the 1800's. Lots of history. John and Pam are great hosts, will give you a tour of their home and cook you a made to order breakfast. I will stay here again when I come up next year for the Rally.

Totally Fabulous
This is a gorgeous historic home with a beautiful view of the Mohawk River. The host has been working on the home for 30 years, and he is a perfectionist. Every piece of furniture is an antique. (Not a place to take small children.) Breakfast was delicious, with great coffee. Not your typical B&B!

John and Jan are awesome hosts. I felt welcomed and cared for. John maintains an impressive collection of unique pieces of art and furniture. He also makes a delicious and generously-portioned morning meal. The coffee is, sincerely, the best coffee I’ve ever had (and I’m an old woman with a coffee obsession!) I recommend having a cup on the verandah overlooking Lake Mohawk. //swoon//

John is very nice and wants to be sure your stay a good one. The home is beautiful and immaculate. I felt like I was staying in a museum as all the furniture and fixtures are period pieces. The breakfast was made to order and several options were given, served on china. We stayed in the first floor bedroom. The sheets were super soft. The bathroom was marble and towels were very soft too. The only thing not perfect was the bedroom, though very lovely is quite small with very little room for luggage.

The proprietor was very kind and accommodating, and quite proud of the restoration he had done at the historic Inn - but he was very uptight about not touching the antiques, not putting glasses down with out coasters, not putting bags on furniture, etc. It was a little uncomfortable to get comfortable!

Really? My introduction to you was as follows: All the antiques are from 1740 to 1920, all conserved or restored so please enjoy them. Since all the furniture is a shellac based finish, the will be damaged with a wet glass, please use coasters. The fabrics are silk, mohair and velvets of the period. You may use them and sit on them but please do not put dirty bags on the fabric. Some of the fabrics cost over $400 per yard. Oakcliff has earned a high reputation as a historic inn and not one created with used furniture. Maybe you are better suited for the Red Roof Inn!

The house is amazing and the view of the Mohawk River is spectacular. I'm very fond of older homes and was also glad there was NO TV in the room---that would have spoiled the ambiance. Our host John was extremely accommodating and served a wonderful breakfast ;-)

Secluded B&B
Stayed here to attend concerts at the SPAC. The house is historic (Victorian) full of antiques and set on a quiet road with a water view off the beaten track. It is however near to several tourist sites. This is a B&B and although it has wi-fi does not offer in-room amenities such as coffee/tea or tv. Owner was not available at check in, but had called us to give instructions about arrival. The owner, John was very friendly, as was his friend Pam and gave useful info about sites/restaurants to visit. Breakfast was cooked to order, selection was made from a menu the previous evening. Times for breakfast were a little early (especially on Sunday), but that may be my preference.

Response from John on 29 Aug 2018
Thank you for the kind response. We do have tv's with Netflix for all guests in the rooms. Since few were using them I do not have them quite so visible. I should communicate that to guests on arrival. I have had bad experiences with coffee , tea and food in the rooms in the past. Since the fabrics are all very expensive custom made mohairs, French and Italian Silks and fine velvets, spillage and stains are a concern. I am happy you enjoyed your stay and I enjoyed your company. John

Wonderful
Lovely hotel and John, the manager there, took good care of us. The B&B is easy to miss but look for the historical marker. the house is old but the rooms are done up. We were at the Mohawk room and it was big and bright with an attached private big bath. there is nothing close by, which is a great thing, but wonderful restaurants not 10 mins away.

A Special Experience
We spent one night at Oakcliff Bed and Breakfast in early spring of 2015. A quiet, clean, and picturesque house with wonderful hosts - a modern interpretation of a late 19'th century outing in the country. John and Susan have many stories to share, yet respect the visitor's privacy. Fans of photography, history, or breakfast will have a memorable and relaxing stay.

Oakcliff in the winter
We arrived at 8:00 p.m. in the snow and the front door was locked, so we were unsure which way to go in, the painted porch floor was slippery and there was no railing, so I felt unsafe. That being said, when we walked in, there was a vanilla candle burning and the interior smelled wonderful! The rooms were restored to the time period of the home and really looked beautiful. My favorite room was the library and when I renovate my home, I plan to put an identical one in my house. The hosts were more than willing to be interrupted during their busy schedule for questions, the bed was extremely comfortable and warm with a down comforter. The coffee was delicious. It is worth the money to live in that elegance for a few days, stepping back in time and up in class.

One night stay in winter.
It was a nice place filled with history which we learned upon our arrival. The owners were very nice and personable. I would like to see it in another season as the snowy season had the river covered. The room and breakfast were nice. The only thing that we didn't like was that our bathroom was on another level, but understand that is a limitation sometimes with an older home.

Genuine Hospitality mixed with Unique Hospitality
Oakcliff combines history, rustic setting, & urban convenience w/ genuine hospitality. My boyfriend and I were greeted with a tour of the house & informed of its history. President Grant had been a frequenter of this property! The whole house has been restored to the period (w/ modern touches such as a jet tub in our bathroom). We were then shown our room & given a discount coupon to one of the local restaurants. Breakfast is made to order. There is a full menu of choices: Coffee is pressed. Fruit is fresh. Eggs are hot. The back overlooks a lake & hill landscape; it's perfect fall colors mixed w/ a quiet retreat. I loved that this place was an escape but we could still access downtown Saratoga Springs. Oakcliff is not far off I-87 which leads right into downtown w/ restaurants & shopping. I would say it's about a 15 min drive but worth it for the quiet oasis away from tourist dense downtown. In the morning, our hosts greeted us & we enjoyed conversation at the breakfast table w/ other guests. Our room was clean, had ample space, & the bed was comfortable. I thought I would mind that our bathroom was detached from our room but we were the only ones using it. It's less than ten steps from the bedroom door. The only critique I have is that the house is easy to miss. We drove right past it. Overall, not a big deal. There is only a small historical sign out front. It could use a nice wood sign with "Oakcliff" written on it hanging over the front porch; visible but not intrusive.

Lovely place, lovely hosts
A gorgeous old house, very nicely appointed. The back has a river view, and in fact you can walk down the hill to the river. John and Susan were wonderful hosts, and served a an excellent breakfast to order, even making a grocery run the night before to accommodate a special request. Of course as an old house it has creaky floors, but that's about the worst I can say. If you like bed & breakfasts, you'll love this place. I highly recommend it!

In a tourist region where even two-star inns were ridiculously overpriced, we found a rare gem. Our host welcomed us at dusk into this magnificent ancestral home. And time stood still to the sound of that intriguing player piano in the museum-like living room. Everything was perfect, from arrival to the room to the exquisite breakfast. We remember thinking that no other place in the region could have offered us such a warm and welcoming experience. Many thanks to our hosts. Claudia & Marc-André
