Go surfing on the large waves and watch hang gliders land on this remote strand in the shadow of a nature reserve.

Tucuns Beach is a secluded sandy haven of tranquility, with marvelous views of the surrounding green mountains. It is 8,200 feet (2,500 meters) long, comprised of sand dunes and dense vegetation with relatively few amenities and structures. Go jogging along this spacious stretch of sand and appreciate the impressive vista.

Swim in the crystal clear water and put on a snorkel and mask for a glimpse of colorful fish. Bring food and drink for a picnic or snacks while sunbathing. Snap photos of the headlands and promontories in the distance, as well as the emerald vegetation framing the stretch of sand. The beach takes its name from the tucum palm trees that are common in the region.

The wind and waves can be fairly strong here. Take a board out on the ocean for surfing or try windsurfing. Be careful swimming in the fairly rough bay. Gaze up at the intriguing rock formations enclosing the beach. The stretch of sand is a popular landing base for hang gliders who depart from the summits of the surrounding mountains.

Enjoy snacks and drinks from one of the small bars toward the southern end of the beach. Stay at a resort or posada overlooking the bay.

Make your way along the meandering trails of the adjacent Reserva Serra das Emerências that lead through thickets of restinga and pau brasil trees. Look for the rare golden lion tamarin monkeys, recognizable by their reddish-gold fur. The green mountain peaks of the park offer some of the best views of Tucuns Beach from above.

Tucuns Beach is in the southeastern corner of the Reserva Serra das Emerências at the beginning of a cape east of Rio de Janeiro. Drive southwest from the town center of Búzios for 4 miles (6 kilometers) to arrive at the beach in less than 20 minutes. Visit nearby strands, such as Ferradurinha Beach, Geriba Beach and Manguinhos Beach.
