Thehistoric fishing port of Skerries is situated on apeninsula about 15 miles north of Dublin city in the Republic of Ireland. Avisit to this small town guarantees breathtaking views of the coast and an uncomplicatedpace of life. With a colourful history behind it, the town is now a popularseaside resort.

Overlooking the Irish Sea, with a series of smallislands accessible just off the coast, you’ll find Skerriesis a prime spot for bird watching, as well as country walks and golf. Historyof Skerries

Asthe legend goes, St. Patrick first arrived in Ireland via Skerries,landing on the nearby Church Island. The town was also the location for theVikings’ first raid on Ireland.

Itis only in the last century that Skerries hasbecome a popular seaside resort, and has developed many activities to keep itsvisitors entertained including golf, sailing, motorbiking and well-maintainedpaths for unbeatable walks along the Irish coastline.

Everytime you stroll along the beach you will be graced with the romantic views ofthe islands that help sit invitingly just out to sea. These five uninhabitedislands make for a striking and poetic sight. Nature lovers will be excited tolearn that a range of wildlife lives here including the largest breeding colonyof Roseate Terns in Europe. You can even take a guided boat tour and visit theunmanned lighthouse on Rockabill Island.

SkerriesMills

TheSkerriesMills, located in the centre of town, are certain to delighthistorians. Visible from miles around, the windmills that stand here are iconicIrish landmarks. They once powered the town’s flour production and are still inaction today. A visit to the mills will give you a glimpse of Skerries,as it would have appeared in the 18th century. A fun and informativefamily day out, why not grab lunch in the Watermill Cafe afterwards?

Festivalsin Skerries

Thekeen mechanic and motorcyclist will definitely want to attend the annual Skerriesmotorcycle race, ‘Skerries 100’. A great spectator’sevent with a buzzing atmosphere, this festival is now part of the town’sheritage and has been held here every July since 1946.

Skerriesis also home to the annual Soundwave Festival that blends an eclectic range ofmusic acts with arts and crafts activities. It’s great fun for the wholefamily, and a wonderful way to support the local music scene. You may even findan international act or two!

Shoppingin Skerries

Whilea short drive into Dublin will take you to all the high street stores you knowand love, Skerries has a wonderfully quaintselection of independent curiosity shops. Find a frock in one of the town’sclothing stores, or browse through wooden toys and old-fashioned sweet shopswith the kids. You could even pick up some local art as a souvenir.
