Situated in the Heart of America, this city is steeped in history and iconic landmarks and is surrounded by scenic countryside.

Sioux Falls is the largest city in South Dakota. Originally built on the quarry and agricultural industries, Sioux Falls now charms visitors with parks, galleries, museums and artefacts of its cultural and historical past.

Begin with a visit to Falls Park in the heart of the city. This 123-acre (50-hectare) park is home to many attractions and a visitor centre. At the Main Falls Outlook you can see the architectural remains of the city’s pioneer past. See remnants of the Queen Bee Mill and the millrace and dam that were constructed to supply power to it. Visit the historical horse barn, now home to art exhibitions. Browse the farmers markets at the Falls Park Open Air Shelter. Inspect the artistry of the Monarch of the Plains statue and the American Farmer sculpture. Afterward, have coffee in the Falls Overlook Café, which was once the Light and Power Company building.

Outside Falls Park, there are plenty of other local cultural attractions to visit. See the Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science, the Visual Arts Centre, the Kirby Science Discovery Centre, the memorial to the World War II USS South Dakota, the Great Plains Zoo, the Husby Performing Arts Centre, the Delbridge Museum and the Old Courthouse Museum with historic exhibits and live concerts.

For nature lovers, there are woodland, wetland and agricultural landscapes to explore. Enjoy a day at the Great Bear Recreation Park where you can ski in winter and hike in summer. Be mesmerized by butterflies and meet colourful sea creatures at the Sertoma Butterfly House & Marine Cove. Jog, in-line skate, walk or bike along the Big Sioux River and recreational greenway, and visit the Loess Mountain Range where you can spot deer and other wildlife.

Located on the banks of the Big Sioux River, Sioux Falls is an easy day’s drive from many major Midwestern cities. Take a road trip to enjoy the Midwest countryside on your way to Sioux Falls or fly into the city’s airport.
