4/10 Poor

"My stay would've been great. However, I booked a king sized bed and paid for it through Expedia and was given a room with a double bed. When I called the front desk on arriving at my room to find a double bed I was told that there were no king beds available. They made no offer of compensating me for the price difference. No attempt whatsoever to try to satisfy our complaint. A full-blown bait & switch. Reading the fine it basically says that they can give you whatever room they want and aren't obligated to give you a lesser rate for a lesser room. Use of the swimming pool requires wearing a swim cap. These were not provided so we weren't able to use the pool at all so that was also disappointing. It's a shame because otherwise it was a nice enough place. Breakfast was good and the property was clean and quiet. I really wish they would've just given us what we paid for or compensated us for the difference. It really made for a much poorer experience."

"We arrived at Dooly's Hotel Birr and spent 2 hours trying to get in and eventually had help from a nearby business who found Dooly's was closed for renovations) even though I had done an online check in the night before, and that we had been rebooked at the County Arms 2 minutes away but were not notified. My review is for the County Arms hotel where the staff were extremely helpful, the room well presented and spacious, the bathroom was very nice and had a fabulous shower. We had dinner at the restaurant and it was excellent quality. The included breakfast was also excellent quality. The location and grounds / gardens were great also."

"This is a lovely farmhouse about a mile outside Birr, County Offaly. The owners are a great couple; the hospitality was fantastic & obvious from the start; there is WIFI; car parking space; room very comfortable; John even charged my electric car; the breakfast was fabulous. This was a better experience than most hotels. We really enjoyed our stay; pity it was just the one night. Overall a brilliant experience."
