Khlong Toei Guide

Mostly known for housing Bangkok’s largest crowded area, the Khlong Toei district is much more than just a large ‘shanty neighbourhood’. On the contrary, some of Bangkok’s most interesting landmarks and shopping malls are found within this area. Khlong Toei stretches from the banks of the Chao Phraya River, to the bustling sois off Sukhumvit Road. This district is also home to the Bangkok Port, one of Asia’s most important trade hubs.

Don’t Miss

Khlong Toei is an interesting place to explore as several important landmarks are located inside this district.

There are several museums and galleries that reside within Khlong Toei. The Bangkok Planetarium and the Science Centre are great spots for both kids and adults, while the former residence of Prince Naris has been transformed into a brilliant little museum.

There are numerous parks within the district. The most visited green space in the district is Benjakitti Park, which features a large lake, playground equipment, walking track and food stalls. A smaller but nonetheless busy park in this area is Benjasiri Park. It is nestled between the Emporium and several high-rise hotels.

While in the port district, tourists should head to PAT Stadium. Here, the local premier league football team plays every week, and thanks to the large amount of local support, a game with Port FC is guaranteed to be loud and enjoyable. The standard of football is quite high too.

Restaurants and Bars

If tourists are looking for a reliable dining source in Khlong Toei, then eating in the shopping malls like Emporium and The EmQuartier will certainly satisfy the cravings. The restaurants that line Sukhumvit, especially along sois 24 and 26, are impressive. Japanese restaurants are extremely popular in this district. For a night out with friends, Khlong Toei’s Sukhumvit area boasts plenty of pubs and bars. The Sportsman’s Bar is certainly one of the more well-established pubs in the Khlong Toei district.

Shopping

This district is home to Bangkok’s largest wet market. Though it’s not a popular stop-off point for tourists, the market place is always busy with locals, so travellers are more than welcome to visit. From the Khlong Toei Markets, head east to the luxurious Emporium and The EmQuartier Shopping Malls. The mall is spectacular, but the prices here are quite high. In the afternoons and evenings, the Nana area is jam-packed with everything from clothes to accessories to handicrafts.
