Find out more about Ikebukuro

About Ikebukuro

Located in northwest Tokyo, the district of Ikebukuro is home to one of the most important train hubs in the Japanese capital. The district is also famous as a commercial and entertainment hearth for the city of Tokyo with plenty of shopping centres, restaurants, and attractions. Getting here is easy since the Metro Marunouchi Line and Yurakucho Line pass through Ikebukuro Station.

Don’t Miss

Most tourists head straight to the soaring heights of Sunshine 60, which was once the tallest building in Tokyo. The observation deck at the top of the building gives an incredible view of not just Ikebukuro, but the surrounding northwest region of Tokyo. The Sunshine City Complex that surrounded the skyscraper also boasts an aquarium that is great for the whole family and plenty of interesting shops and restaurants.

Namja Town is an ideal attraction for travellers of all ages. Located on the second and third floors of Sunshine 60, this theme park is home to video games, arcades, haunted houses, and restaurants. Children and adults will love the vintage games on display including some that date back to the 1960s.

Restaurants and bars

Most of Ikebukuro’s restaurants are located in or near the train station. Both the Tobu and Seibu Department Stores are home to restaurants and grocery markets so visitors can find plenty of food here. Inside Sunshine 60 is Namja Town, which is famous for its ice cream stalls and gyoza dishes. Western restaurants are available in Ikebukuro, not to mention authentic Japanese venues. There are only several bars in the district. However, great music and excellent social scenes are found inside the clubs and bars of Ikebukuro.

Shopping

Two of Japan’s largest department stores, Seibu and Tobu, are located right next to Ikebukuro Station. Visitors can find a huge range of products here, not to mention lots of restaurants and entertainment services too. The area has some great anime stores, selling manga comics and other anime-related books for guests. The Sunshine 60 building is the largest structure in the district and also boasts some interesting clothing and merchandise stores.
