Geumjeongsan

Geumjeongsan featuring forests as well as a small group of people
Make your way to the very top of Busan’s famous mountain, where there is a vast fortress, an ancient temple, abundant wildlife and panoramic views.

Geumjeongsan might not be the highest mountain in South Korea, but it is certainly one of the most famous. Embark on a hike up this picturesque mountain and discover the country’s largest fortress, ancient defensive walls, trickling waterfalls and far-reaching views.

Throughout history Geumjeongsan has been strategic in the defense of the country. It was for this reason that the great fortress was built here, in the Three Kingdoms period. A very important temple, Beomeosa, was also built close to the fortress, attesting to the significance of this site.

The main peak of the mountain, Godangbong Peak, towers 2,629 feet (802 meters) above sea level. Yet there are other impressive peaks here, too. Janggunbong Peak, in the north, measures 2,385 (727 meters), and Sanggyebong Peak in the south stands 2,093 feet (638 meters) high. Baegyangsan Mountain stands 2,106 feet (642 meters) high and is behind the Seongjigok Valley. Choose one of the many marked trails which vary from between 2 and 4 hours in length and get out into the heart of the mountain. Look for ancient defensive walls and fortress gates.

Hike past impressive rocky cliffs, amble through dense forest and hear the sounds of birds and other creatures as they rustle through the undergrowth. Identify some of the 2,300 species of trees and 600 species of animal that call the mountain home. Stop at one of Geumjeongsan’s 14 mineral springs, which supply the local population with clear water.

If you don’t have the time or capabilities to hike up the mountain consider instead taking a ride in the cable car. Enjoy views from the top across Busan city and the sea. On a clear day Gwangan Bridge is visible in the distance. The Geumjeong Fortress is a short stroll from the top of the cable car.

Begin your Geumjeongsan hike at the beautiful Beomeosa Temple or one of the many other trailheads. Getting to the mountain from Busan is easy as several public transportation routes run nearby. There is a charge for the cable car.
