It was wonderful to stay in a castle in Tuscany no less Every person we met was attentive and kind We were staying near friends and didn’t hang around the grounds much or use the pool but everything seemed well kept It’s really a place to retreat to eat at and sleep at which served our purpose well
My friends and I planned a 2 week long trip to Italy with our stay in Tuscany being our middle stop. While we were very excited to arrive, we were quickly let down once we realized what we expected to get with our stay was not possible. We booked Via Hotels.com and were told we would have a room with Air Conditioning as well as laundry services on site. When given our rooms, we were met with the lack of AC and 2 fans to “help”. There was also no laundry available on site and we resorted to hand washing 6 peoples clothes in the bathtub. It was an adventure to say the least but not one we were expecting mid trip. The restaurant around the corner from our hotel was the saving grace of the trip as well as two of the other local wineries. The views are stunning but just know going in, you will be getting many un air conditioned nights and lack luster responses from the hotel staff.
Very beautiful location. Excellent hotel in the Tuscan countryside. Food was top notch and view of vineyards and olive trees amazing. Highly recommendable to anyone looking for a romantic style holiday under the Tuscan sun.
This hotel is unreal. Outrageously nice. The landscape in breathtaking, the staff is incredible, and the restaurant / tasting room is remarkable. The rooms are giant, clean, it's like staying in a giant suite. I had the standard room and I was blown away. The whole place was incredible.
We had a fabulous 4 night stay here. Would definitely stay again, the location was amazing. We enjoyed breakfast and dinner at the lovely restaurant and the wine tasting was fantastic.
Beautiful hilltop location, with breathtaking views. Medieval fortress and villa allows one to experience Chianti from a historic and soulful perspective as you walk across cobblestones that have been traversed for centuries. This is not a cookie-cutter hotel setting and we loved it. Our suite was huge, comfortable, quiet and clean, with both a large bedroom and separate large living room. The antique and eclectic furnishings were interesting and the rooms were functional rather than creatively decorated. The hotel provides a rustic and authentic atmosphere more than a luxurious one which, again, we truly enjoyed. There is also a huge area on the top floor for reading, watching TV or just lounging, which leads to a rooftop terrace from which the views and sunsets were stunning. The independently operated restaurant has been beautifully updated which provides an elegant setting for their upscale, perfectly prepared dinner, popular with locals as well as hotel guests. The restaurant collaborates with the hotel to provide breakfast for guests. Theirs is no ordinary bed and breakfast offering, which definitely adds to the value of staying at Rocca di Castagnoli. The estate still operates as a highly-regarded winery and the onsite wine-tasting room and barrel room tour is another plus. Service and congeniality abounds from all staff encountered in the hotel, restaurant and winery. We were happy to be there and sorry when it was time to leave.

The surprise highlight of our recent family trip to Italy, the Rocca di Castagnoli surpassed all expectations. From our first view of the 12th century castle nestled amongst rolling vineyards, to the warm greeting, elegant rooms, gorgeous pool, super comfortable beds and sweeping views across the valleys from our room, our experience was exceptional. We also enjoyed wonderful food and spectacular local wine in the stunning vaulted-ceilinged restaurant - easily the best we had during our 10 days in Italy. Only regret is that we didn't have more time there and we're already planning our next holiday around this beautiful place!
It was a great place to stay. It was very clean and we loved the history behind it! We had fun wine tasting there and would definitely go back if it was their busier time. We wanted to get away from the crowded cities. The frustrating things we experienced were that it was their off season (January 1-3) and so their restaurant was closed, our room wasn't cleaned while we were there, and the front office was closed when we showed up. I wish it was stated when we booked that their on-sight restaurant was closed for majority of the year. We were planning on that being open. But, overall it was the quietness and character we were looking for.
Beautiful views of the countryside complement this stunning castle. Rooms were very clean and provided more than enough space. Fantastic wines and the best food we had in all of Italy! Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Would definitely return.
Wonderful apatrtment in an ancient setting surrounded by beautiful Tuscan scenery. The hotel employees were so nice and helpful..the wine tasting was a great experience. Nice hotel but a little out of the way ..
Enjoyed our three night stay in the Chianti area. The Rocca di Castagnoli is an impressive ancient fortress hotel that is also a working winery. Our room had splendid views over the surrounding countryside and vineyards. The hotel restaurant is privately managed and of a high standard which is just as well as the township of Gaiole is some six kilometers away and has nothing much to offer. Although there is a local bus service, a car is essential fo convenience.
We had thought we were a bit lost and began to ask directions from a gentleman who approached our car as we were turning around. Before I could get two words out, Max (the most amazing front best/property manager I've ever encountered) addressed me by name and welcomed me to our home for the next 5 days. We were made to feel right at home and a part of the family (even though this is billed as a simple hotel…it is far more)
The property is part of a very prestigious winery and tours are available upon request. Max was beyond helpful throughout the week including introducing us to a small restaurant just at the end of their driveway. Run by Emauelle, the food was greed and the wine (as expected) superb. It became our last stop each night as we enjoyed the company as much as the cuisine.
Additionally, this place is very quiet and perfectly centrally located to more than you could ask for during the week. We particularly enjoyed Radda in Chianti (about 20 min), Siena (about 40 min) and Cortona (about an hour) but there are many, many more small little villages to explore.
Also, some of the best wine shopping around was just by pulling off the road to one of the many direct sales vineyards within less than 15 min drive from the hotel. (and Max will arrange shipping, for theirs or any other wines you may purchase.) As you can tell, we can't speak highly enough of our experience...due in large part to the help received from our new friend Max.
