There are a number of different swim programs available, each of which offer you a chance to observe the intelligent, inquisitive and playful nature of these animals.
From the safety of a platform in the water, watch how the dolphins sing and dance during the Dolphin Encounter. Alternatively, glide across the water at speed by holding onto one of their fins during the Dolphin Swim Adventure. You can also have one of the sea creatures propel you through the water as you ride on a boogie board.
The most popular aquatic program is the Dolphin Royal Swim. Grab onto the dorsal fins of two dolphins for a thrilling ride. This program also includes the “dolphin push,” where two of the animals will push you up by the feet so you are zipping through the water in a standing position.
Though the activities are suitable for good swimmers of all ages, Dolphin Encounter is considered the gentlest and most child-friendly.
Dolphins aren’t the only swimming partners to choose from at Dolphin Discovery. You can also take to the water with sea lions and manatees, the large marine mammals sometimes called “sea cows.”
Located in Puerto Aventuras on the Riviera Maya, the dolphinarium is approximately 25 minutes’ drive from Playa del Carmen, 20 minutes from the ancient Mayan ruins at Tulum and an hour from Cancun.
There are bus services from Playa del Carmen and Tulum. If you prefer to drive, there are plenty of car parking spaces at the resort. Alternatively, the dolphinarium runs a roundtrip transportation service between Cancun and Puerto Aventuras.
