Østerbro Travel Guide

Copenhagen

A row of historic buildings with varied architectural styles, including a prominent red brick tower and a yellow facade.
A large group of people exercising outdoors in a park with trees and a clear sky.
A row of colorful townhouses with a bicycle parked in front of the blue house.
A modern building with a traditional half-timbered house in front.
A cruise ship deck with a pool area, lounge chairs, and a sunset over the water.

Experience a beautiful part of Copenhagen, where you can experience city life, with its shops and restaurants, and green spaces, where you can relax and enjoy nature.

Wide streets with great shops, a lovely atmosphere and large green spaces to relax in are what you will find on any Østerbro city break. This district comprises the northern part of Copenhagen and is known as the capital's affluent area, which is obvious from the way it looks and feels.

When Copenhagen was still surrounded by ramparts, Østerbro was the place where many Copenhageners took their summer holiday because of its stunning nature. This atmosphere and nature still characterise the area and are what bring many visitors to the area. Østerbro (or Eastern Bridge) got its name from its location near the historical Eastern Gate.

Visit Parken, Denmark's national stadium, or take a trip to Svanemøllestranden, a beach with a 400-ft-long bathing pier. Regardless of the weather, a walk in Fælledparken is simply a must on a weekend trip. This park is always full of people relaxing and having a good time. Something else you must do whilst in Østerbro is walk to the Kastellet (Citadel) and visit Den lille Havfrue (the Little Mermaid).

Østerbro comprises Indre (Inner) and Ydre (Outer) Østerbro, where the Indre part borders Nørrebro and Indre By. This is where the high-end shops and houses can be found, and is where Denmark's first villa neighbourhood was built. Ydre Østerbro is located towards the north, and is more of an industrial and residential area. Its eastern part by Nordhavnen and Amerika Plads is currently being redeveloped, but is definitely worth a visit if you're interested in modern architecture.

You can get around easily in Østerbro using the S-trains and buses. The new M2 and M3 metro lines also connect Østerbro with its surrounding neighbourhoods, so you can easily travel around during your holiday in Østerbro, whether you want to experience the other districts and attractions or get to the airport or the main station.

On your holiday to Østerbro, you will experience the more high-end side of Copenhagen whilst still getting to enjoy relaxing nature.
