Depending on where you're coming from, your flight to Switzerland could be completely painless or it could go on forever. We've rounded up some useful travel tips that will help you start your unforgettable escape on the right foot. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• It's easy — first, put in your passport, travel docs, wallet and daily medications. Next, you'll need some in-flight entertainment to help pass the time. A juicy novel and a phone crammed with your favourite shows are some wonderful options. If you plan to take a short nap, a comfy neck pillow and some noise-cancelling headphones will also be useful. Finally, leave some space for a toothbrush and some cleansing wipes to ensure you touchdown feeling fresh and raring to go.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of banned items can differ between air carriers, the general guide to follow is nothing sharp, flammable or explosive. This includes things like screwdrivers, pocket knives, spray paint and flares. Sporting equipment like hockey sticks, and items that could harm passengers, such as swords and batons, are also banned from the cabin.

What to wear on a flight:

• You'll want to go for comfort over style. Prepare for temperature changes by donning layers, and opt for slightly roomy, flat footwear like sneakers.
• Most of us have heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged periods of sitting. To reduce your risk on board, stay hydrated, consider wearing compression tights or socks and keep your feet and legs moving.

It's all about being prepared. We've pulled together some helpful hints for a speedy trip through security. Watch out Switzerland, here you come:

• First things first. Your travel documents and ID will need to be inspected by security personnel. Keep them at hand to avoid fumbling around for them.
• The X-ray machine is up next. Empty your pockets and remove anything that is likely to set off the scanner's alarm. This includes things like earphones or headphones, as well as your coat or jacket. They'll all need to go on the X-ray conveyor belt.
• For just a few moments, you'll need to unplug from the digital world. Your phone, tablet and any other electronics also need to be sent through the scanner.
• Any gels or liquids, such as shampoo or hand cream, that you want to take on board need to be in containers no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). Also, they all must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• It's also possible you'll need to take your shoes off to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on sneakers is always a good idea.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them safely away in your checked suitcase. They won't be allowed on board and will be confiscated.
