• Caused by sustained periods of immobility, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot condition that can affect passengers during long flights. Reduce the risks by staying hydrated, keeping your legs and feet moving and wearing compression socks to help improve your circulation.

A little pre-planning before your flight can make your trip to Amalfi quick and painless. We've rounded up some handy hints for a speedy journey through security:

• Airport security personnel first need to verify that you have a valid ID and travel documents before you can proceed any further. Keep them close by.
• Time to strip down. Well sort of. Your coat, belt, keys and other small items, like your earphones, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process faster by removing them before your turn.
• All electronic devices, including your phone and tablet, are also required to be separately scanned.
• Any liquids or gels, such as hair oil or hand cream, that you want to take on board need to be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). They must also all fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• The right choice of footwear can save you several valuable minutes. Hiking or heavy-style boots are often required to be removed and X-rayed separately. Lightweight sneakers are usually not.
• Airlines won't allow any pocket knives or other sharp items in the cabin. If you need to bring these kinds of items, check them in.
