About Akasaka
Just a short distance from some of Tokyo’s most alluring attractions, the district of Akasaka is characterised by corporate skyscrapers, beautiful hotels, and bureaucratic establishments. Its central location means Akasaka is a great spot to stay for tourists wanting to explore the Japanese capital with ease.
Don’t MissThe stunning Hie Shrine is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of downtown Tokyo’s busy streets. Nestled on top of a peaceful hill, the shrine is visited by thousands each day. Getting to Hie Shrine is possible on foot with a steep set of stairs leading to the top of the hill. The walkway leading up to the shrine is dotted by intermittent torii, creating a romantic and calming tunnel.
The Imperial Palace in Chiyoda is just a few minutes from the heart of Akasaka. Found on the grounds of the former Edo Castle, this large palace is predominantly closed to the public. However, there are certain areas that remain open throughout the year. On the northern section lays Kitanomaru Park and the southern public gardens can also be visited by tourists year-round. Only on New Year’s does the inner gate of the palace open to the public.
Restaurants and barsAkasaka boasts some of the classiest restaurants in Tokyo. Even though the district is famous for its business culture and bureaucratic core, the night time brings plenty of excellent restaurants and clubs for visitors to enjoy. The best places for dinner and drinks are found along Sotobori-dori and Hitotsugi-dori.
Tourists will find a huge range of dining options including both Japanese and international cuisines. Not surprisingly, the dishes in Akasaka’s restaurants tend to be quite expensive.
ShoppingUnlike other nearby areas, Akasaka does not have a renowned shopping culture. Nevertheless, there are plenty of specialty stores located along the main streets. In addition, Akasaka Sacas is a modern development that boasts some interesting retail stores within a shopping mall.
