"This place had the feel of a "best-kept-secret"; gem-of-a-find type place. Everything about staying there was fascinating. As the management, to their credit, explicitly warns on their listings, the structure is old and rustic. But this wasn't a deterrent in any way, it adds to the charm and they do an excellent job keeping it clean, well maintained and accommodating. As a westerner looking to explore some backwaters parts of Japan and stay in a traditional Onsen ryokan that is not a tourist trap, this was the perfect best-of-both-worlds fit. The manager spoke good English and was helpful so that there was no confusion or culture shock, but none of the authenticity was compromised. I would certainly stay there again, even go out of my way again - drive up to the mountains - in order to stay there if overnighting en route to or from Tokyo southward."

"Ryokan Sansui is a peaceful retreat with beautiful mountain views, private outdoor onsen rooms, and the most dedicated, attentive and kind staff. We felt completely pampered by their service and hospitality. The meals were traditional omekase using local and seasonal ingredients. The food is clearly made with love, pride, and care. The japanese-style room had a sweeping view of the mountains and comfortable futon beds. We had plenty of space to unpack and do our morning yoga in the room. The robes are high quality. The room and the hotel in general are very quiet and peaceful. It is easy to get to the ryokan from the bus stop, just a 2-3 minute walk on the main road."

"The hotel delivered exactly what we were seeking: top end but traditional experience of J. Alps, with gorgeous natural spring baths. Way more than expected, the Kaiseki dinners were outstanding, and staff went over and above to help (we even needed an MD). I would very highly recommend this onsen inn."

"We absolutely loved our stay at this wonderful hotel. The room was spacious, beautifully designed, and incredibly comfortable — a perfect place to relax and unwind. The meals were truly exceptional and among the most special dining experiences we had during our trip. The hotel is located in a charming little town that feels almost as if it were taken straight out of a movie. The atmosphere, surroundings, and attention to detail made our stay feel very special. A beautiful and memorable experience"

"We lived our stay at this very authentic ryokan like hotel. The staff were generous and kind, we were able to book the private onsen for a very reasonable price to accommodate our tattoos and our family going together. The half board was delicious. This is not a luxury stay so much as a real Japanese cultural experience and we had a great time as a family of four USA folk with teens."

"From the very start to the very finish of our stay, my family and I felt so very welcomed. The hotel was extremely clean and orderly. This particular hotel is very cozy. The onsen bath/ ofuro was extremely relaxing, clean, and refreshing. The staff are above and beyond professional and extremely courteous. We will definitely come back to stay at this hotel. We highly recommend this hotel after a long day of hiking and sightseeing."
