Hotel staff made repeated requests for sensitive personal information without any legal basis:
1) At check-in, even after writing my address where I live in Japan, they asked for various forms of ID as "確認" ("confirmation"). Hotels have no legal authority to demand such information of guests who provide an address in Japan.
This request felt very coercive, as the request was made during checkin with the implicit threat of refusal to check me in. Another hotel employee only intervened to correct his colleague's error because I pushed back against this request.
2) A followup letter was left at my room later that night asking for new information about my child. This felt very unwelcoming when coming back to my room at the end of the evening.
3) At checkout, I asked clarification about the letter. The request was suspicious as no other hotel in Japan has ever made similar requests. I am fine providing all information as needed, but the staff could not explain any legal basis for this request.
Instead, without bothering to look up my record where he would have seen my address provided at checkin, he immediately asked to see a passport for my son (good luck getting a passport from a 2 year old Japanese citizen, in Japan...)
I felt totally unwelcome at this hotel, and I received no apology for these repeated unnecessary requests.
Also, the air quality was poor due to the heating.
