Set on the shores of Lake Petén Itzá, this pretty island town presents a Mediterranean-style charm and is a gateway to the ancient Mayan ruins of Tikal.

Reasons to visit

  • Tikal National Park
  • Tikal
  • Church of Our Lady of the Remedies
This is my most epic self-portrait, so far:

Contemplating the Milky Way, standing all alone on top of El Henequén—one of the many ancient mayan temples you'll find along the way to El Mirador—surrounded by monkeys, fireflies and an ocean of trees.

No wonder why our ancestors looked up into the sky and thought of mighty gods.
