This is a very special ryokan offering in that 1) it’s just inside the park gates, 2) some of the nicest Japanese traditions are honored here, 3) you can get your own open air bath that overlooks a private garden. I have no idea why others would not give this 5 stars unless they reserved the wrong type of room. Their gift shop also has wonderful things that are easy to pack to bring back for the folks at home.

Incredible Authentic Stay

The staff were wonderful, from the moment we were picked up at the station to accomodating a food allergy they made our stay a great one. If possible splurge for the room with a view overlooking the city. Traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast were incredible.

Room was comfortable, but could use some more thorough cleaning. Onsen was very nice, and the shuttle bus was great. The food was excellent, although the dining room can and should be upgraded/deep cleaning.

Nice ryokan on the mountain

A guesthouse (ryokan) on the mountain slope near Nara. Nice views and good services. We had a room with a balcony and a traditional bath at the balcony. The room proce included a 12 dish traditional Japanese dinner and a breakfast, so all included it was truly a bargain. The mountain peak with its views is also a worthwhile place to visit.

Traditional Japanese Experience

Lovely room, we had a private onsen which was fantastic! The banquet dinner was tasty, beautifully displayed & served. Same with the full traditional Japanese breakfast. I found it hard to sleep on the floor, but it was all part of the experience.

Fun ryokan experience

Stayed only one night in a room with private hot bath on the patio and had dinner in a private room. Staff was awesome, the area was beautiful, worth a splurge for the Ryokan experience. It's a bit outside the city, but the shuttle bus was great and the staff were helpful with instructions on where to meet it at the train station. The meal was wonderful in a small room with pretty view of a pond.

Overall, this place is a great option if you're looking for a peaceful and relaxing stay. The surroundings are calm and serene. However, I did notice that the hotel facilities seemed a bit outdated. Although there were some updated amenities, I also noticed some black mold around the vents in the Rykon. The staff member who checked us in and served our private dining was exceptional.

Relaxing & Efficient Check in

We arrived in Nara. Left our bags at the hotel office so we could explore Nara. Our bags were taken to the hotel and put in our room. We were taken to the hotel in their bus later. We were given local refreshments upon arrival and checked in straight away. Fantastic. All staff were exceptionally polite.

We were really impressed by the hotel when they received us with our names on the board and immediately assigned a staff to guide us to a sitting area where drinks and snacks were served ! Check in was done very quickly and we were guided to choose yukatas before we were brought to our room. The view from the traditional tatami room is breathtaking ! We also had the choice of dining in room or at the restaurant. We enjoyed our stay there and the shuttle service made staying in the mountains a breeze. We will stay again if we revisit Nara !

Great traditional Japanese experience

Pretty much everything about this place was great. The staff were welcoming and very helpful (and did well with speaking English). The room itself was brilliant and was everything you could hope for from a tatami mat ryokan room. I'd definitely recommend the private hot spring room! Yukata are supplied too to give the full traditional experience. Location was perfect and was easily accessible due to the free shuttle bus they offer from Kintetsu-Nara station. The shuttle bus also took us straight to Nara Park the following day which was very helpful

Traditional Onsen Hotel

A traditional onsen hotel in the area with free shuttle service from JR station. Reception and dining services were great but communication in English was still a barrier here. We have reserved a "panoramic view" room several months ago via Hotel.com because we liked the descriptions and photos shown on the hotel website. Unluckily when we arrived and during check-in, it was learnt that there was only one such room in this hotel with such "panoramic view" while other rooms, other than those on ground floor, still have nice view over the area. A bit disappointment on our side because we were photo-takers and liked to relax and enjoy the environment from the room where we stayed.

I absolutely LOVED my stay at Mikasa Ryokan. Everything from the service pre-arrival to the check out was flawless. Upon arrival in Nara, they held onto my bags so that I could explore uninhibited. They provided a shuttle with multiple departure times to the hotel to choose. I rented a bicycle and explored Nara for a few hours. The ride from the station to hotel took less than 10 minutes, and all my bags loaded up for me. I was greeted with multiple smiles, given a welcome matcha, and was guided to choose my Yukata after 1:1 discussion planning my dinner, breakfast and next day shuttle. I was even told where Sakura Blossoms were just coming into view. The room with open air bath was incredible. Room was large, clean and so relaxing. Had wonderful views of the skyline and peach / sakura blossoms. Dinner was also incredible. As I stayed two nights I had different meals for both days, including breakfast. I’m usually very weird eating fish but the meal was amazing. I was guided on how to eat and in what order and tried everything once! The second dinner was beef, and eating in private room was also a beautiful experience. The hot spring baths were clean and never cluttered or loud. There was a late night bar and vending machines for drinks for when the bar closed. I will never forget my incredible experience! Thank you to all the staff who contributed to making my visit the best it could be

Quiet, cozy, relaxed experience and retreat

The ryokan's location is located in a remote area in the mountains near the Nara Park. They offer free shuttle from the Nara Kintetsu Station and also JR Nara Station with advance booking. From the station to the ryokan is about a 10 minute drive. You would arrive to the lobby greeted by the staff in a very friendly manner. They bring you traditional cold mocha tea in an area that has fabulous view of the Nara Park and city area. Female guests can also even choose their own style and colour of yukata before staff show you to your room. We booked ourselves into a Japanese style room with an outdoor onsen bath. Privacy is guaranteed as the scaffolding ensures that there is no way for views into the outdoor bath area. The rooms were comfortable with a small coffee table area just before the outdoor terrace. All stays come standard with breakfast and dinner. The dinner was a traditional Japanese kaiseki dinner. The amount of food they serve is ridiculous and we find it impossible to finish. You are served with about 10 different dishes including sashimi, hotpot, steamed dishes, tempura, soup and all that. Every dish was prepared very nicely and you get to enjoy your dinner in your own private dining room. This dining room is basically yours for the rest of the stay. Your tatami and bed is prepared in your room while you enjoy your dinner and the sleep quality is very good provided that you are literally only sleeping on the floor.

We had a fantastic stay at the Mikasa Ryokan, which we would describe more as an experience from the moment we entered the hotel, until the moment we were dropped back at the JR Station by the hotel shuttle bus. The staff are very attentive, the food was excellent and we would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel. We did have a problem in one of the rooms we booked and we were immediately moved to another room within minutes. Fantastic experience and one everyone should try if planning a stop in Nara.
