"Absolutely delightful hotel. Me and a friend booked a room each for the Hay Festival, and we couldn’t have been happier with our stay. The staff were wonderful; helpful, friendly, even showed us to our rooms. The location was great, not too far away but far enough that I’d was quiet and tranquil. The breakfast is well worth the money, as is the Old Barn pub across the road, where we ate that night. A fantastic stay, I can’t wait to return with my husband next time."
"I love staying here, it is my go to place when I badly need some downtime.
Staff are still lovely and friendly and helpful (although sad to see some old faces now gone)
Unfortunately on this occasion my Granddaughter and myself decided not to stay the night or have breakfast due to the amount of insects and moths etc in the room. Although there is a notice saying to shut the windows because of the above, the bedroom window wasn’t closed properly and our room had lots of midgies and moths in the bedroom.
I know it has been unbelievably hot but it didn’t seem right to stay in a room where we would probably have been bitten through the night, so after the pool and food, and hanging around until bedtime downstairs playing draught, we decided to go home around 10.30pm - 11.00pm.
Expensive few hours in the place I love going to, due to the bank holiday."
"It seems this hotel hasn't been updated since the 1960s. The carpets were worn and discolored; frankly, we were scared of catching a skin disease if we walked barefoot. With no disposable slippers provided, we wore socks the entire time. A "we don't care" response twice to my message the day before check-in should have been my first clue.
Most importantly, if you have children, do not book this hotel for their safety/life. The windows were disgusting, the paint was chipped, and horrifically, they wouldn't close or lock. With no safety rails, my 3-year-old could have easily fallen out. We got absolutely no sleep because we were terrified. Furthermore, the bathroom had an old internal barrel bolt, keeping us on high alert—if our child locked it from the inside, the only way to open the door would be to break it down.
All night, the loud noise of the boiler starting up and shutting down, combined with creaking floorboards, kept waking me up. After 3:30 AM, I couldn't sleep at all. I wouldn't stay here again for free. With stained orange wallpaper and a cheap MDF headboard glued to the wall, it felt like a last-resort roadside motel. It’s laughable they claim 4 stars; it isn't worth more than £45-£50 a night.
A 4-star hotel should provide water in the room. Instead, reception told us to go n ask at the bar, which was embarrassing. We spent hundreds at that bar only to realise we were being cheated with the wrong mixers. To top it off, the intercom was faulty and never repaired"
