  • El Escorial was built by King Philip II in the late 16th century to serve as both a royal palace and as the seat of the Catholic Church in Spain. In addition to the palace the complex includes a basilica, a convent, a school, a library, and a pantheon. While El Escorial is impressive from the outside, we actually found it a little austere on the inside. In many ways it felt more like a fine art museum than a typically elaborate European palace (such as Versailles). That said, there are some impressive sights, including works by El Greco, Bernini, and Giardini. The library was also quite beautiful, with richly carved wood shelves, a marble floor, and a colorful fresco ceiling by Pellegrino Tibaldi. For me, the highlight of the tour was the 180ft long (55m) Hall of Battles – a barrel-vaulted room where the walls were completely covered in frescos depicting Spain's military victories over the Moors and the French. All aspects of the battle field were portrayed (when you have 180ft, that is quite doable), and the artist employed an interesting trick whereby the more distant, smaller scenes were less saturated, and the background mountains and landscape were set in hues of blue. Overall I'd say El Escorial is worth a visit, but you probably won't need more than a couple of hours to enjoy it.

Room 258 had severe water damage to the floor, door trim and walls. Subfloor was ‘crunching’ under the flooring. It smelled like mildew when entering the room

Too hot.

Definitely the rooms are not 4 stars. Overall nice place, nice service. Very hot in the rooms and hall. No matter what you set the room temperature it would blow more hot air. Told the front desk we’re told the main A/C was still set on heat, turn it off and open window. That let more outside heat and Sun in. As evening temperatures dropped the room cooled off. Closed window to sleep to not hear outside noise then couldn’t sleep because of heat again. Breakfast was good. Don’t think I would return.

Todo el personal fué atento y amable. El desayuno continental es bastante completo. La habitación estaba bien pero tenía cierto deterioro que deberían arreglar (suelo hinchado de haberse inundado, tapicería muy vieja). La mampara de la bañera es un tanto peligrosa para acceder y salir porque hay muy poco espacio y hay riesgo de caerse.

La habitación bastante grande, pero deberían de limpiar o volver a tapizar las sillas y el sillón, ya que da bastante grima por la suciedad que tiene. El agua de la ducha salía con muy poca fuerza, y la opción que nos dieron fue la de ir a ducharnos a otra habitación. Por lo demás bien, lo que vimos del hotel (que tampoco fue mucho) no está mal. Pero el precio del desayuno me pareció desorbitado (por mucho buffet libre que sea), y mas aún cuando viajas con menores y en la web pone que son 7 euros por menor y allí me dijeron 13,90 euros por menor. Eramos 4 (2 adultos 2 niños) y pagar 56 euros por el desayuno me parece un despropósito.
