Depending on where you're coming from, your flight to Alta could be completely painless or it could drag on forever. We've pulled together some useful hints that will help you start your next big adventure on a positive note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• A plane ride can be easy if you carry the right stuff. Firstly, you'll want some toiletry items, such as lip balm and hand cream, a clean pair of socks and a good read. Next, find room in your bag for your laptop, a charger, any daily medications and maybe a neck pillow as well. Lastly, and most importantly, be sure to bring your passport, travel papers and your bank cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of restricted items can differ between airlines, the general rule of thumb is nothing sharp, flammable or explosive. This includes screwdrivers, drills, aerosol cans and flares. Sports equipment like ski poles, and objects that could injure passengers, such as pepper spray and guns, are also banned from the cabin.

What to wear on a flight:

• Comfort should be your number one priority when deciding what to wear on your flight. Loose clothing is a sensible option, as are flat, closed-toe shoes.
• The result of sustained periods of immobility, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clotting condition that can affect some passengers during long-distance flights. Reduce the risks by drinking water, keeping your lower limbs moving and wearing compression socks to help your circulation.

• Airport security personnel first need to make sure that you have a valid passport and matching travel documents before you can proceed any further. Have them close by, ready for inspection.
• After that, both you and your hand luggage will be X-rayed. To speed things up, remove anything that is likely to set the alarm off. Personal belongings like your belt, coat and earphones need to go through the machine.
• Your electronic gadgets like phones and laptops will also have to go on a tray for inspection. Don't worry though, you'll be back online before you know it.
• Any gels or liquids, such as perfume or hairspray, that you want to take on board need to be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). Also, everything must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), zip-lock bag.
• The right choice of footwear can save you several precious minutes. Hiking boots are often required to be removed and X-rayed separately. Slip-on sneakers usually aren't.
• Avoid taking prohibited items in your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them in your checked baggage. They won't be allowed on board and will be confiscated.
