Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge

We had to take a ferry in the dark to get here at sunrise. They only do this at certain times during the year. I love chasing the sunrise. #adventure
Bulls Island, at 5,000 acres, is the largest of four barrier islands found within the Cape Romain NWR. The island consists of maritime forest, fresh and brackish water impoundments, salt marsh, and sandy beaches. If you like to explore nature this is for you. The boat drops off in the morning and noon. Hiked all day and played on the beach.
Hike a mile across the island and find your self on a beautiful beach alone. The Bone Yard is something to see with the waves rolling over it's old bleached trees. Tired of the tourist attractions then you will love Bulls Island.
Watching the sunrise on Bull island is must do, no cars allowed. Go enjoy the peace and quiet. #adventurephotocontest #adventure
"Boneyard Beach" Just a few miles north of Isle of Palms in South Carolina lies this absolute gem of a place called Bulls Island. Accessible only via boats, the island has a long pristine coastline that is very beautiful to explore. The island is part of a wildlife reserve, so no overnight camping is permitted but there is wild camping at nearby Capers Island. You could theoretically camp at Capers Island and kayak to Bulls Island or you could take the Bulls Island Ferry like I did. The price is very reasonable and these guys run an early morning sunrise trip that starts well before dawn and you can make it to the Bulls Island Beach well in time to catch sunrise. I've recently read on their newsletter that they now offer overnight trips to the island as well - there is a house on the middle of the island, which is where you would stay during your overnight trips. Another trip that I'd highly recommend is the ferry trip to the Cape Romaine Lighthouses - there's only 4 in a year offered by the Bulls Island Ferry folks and they tend to sell out. The overnight trips are a little more expensive but the view of the night sky at this location, away from city lights would truly be a sight to behold and I'm looking forward to going on that trip sometime soon. For the avid wildlife folks, this island is supposed to be a paradise during the migratory season. Alligators are plentiful on this island but for the most part, they just laze in the sun and don't bother you.
