Karow Travel Guide

Berlin

Karow is one of the most rural districts of Berlin and yet situated as such that the city centre of Berlin is easily and quickly accessible.

Whilst on a city trip to Berlin, be sure to take an excursion to Karow. Despite being a part of the capital city of Germany, Karow has retained its village character. It was only incorporated into the city in 1920 and today forms part of the district Pankow. Karow was founded in the early 13th century and has always had a more rural character. New Karow was only established in the 1990s and is now a suburb with many family homes. This constellation enables visitors to get a glimpse of the heterogeneous history of Karow. While on your city trip, discover structures from different centuries in different styles. The townscape is dominated by the contrast between old and new.

Karow in the north of Berlin offers some historic sights well worth a visit while on a city trip to the capital. One of them is the village church which was built in 1250 and is one of the oldest buildings in all of Berlin. Alt-Karow Street also impresses with many historic farmhouses which have survived the eventful history of Berlin. Discover an old school building and a fire station from past times. The train station in Karow is fascinating from an architectural perspective as it was built in the typical style of such station buildings in the 19th century.

Enjoy the idyllic nature around Berlin during your mini-break in Karow: A circular trail in the conservation area Karower Teiche invites you to take a walk amongst elder trees and reeds. Viewing platforms on the banks of the large natural ponds are the perfect place to watch water birds but also reed warblers or red-backed shrikes. You will be close to the city but feel like you are in the middle of nature. Another great contrast to a typical city trip is an excursion to the Barnim Landscape Park on the eastern city limits. Vast agricultural spaces invite you for a relaxing stroll.

When travelling to Karow, be sure to take a short trip to the city centre of Berlin as well. Because as rural as Karow may seem, the highlights of Berlin are not far away. The S-Bahn train line S2 will take you directly to the centre from the train station in Karow. You can reach Friedrichstraße station in only 20 minutes. The stations Potsdamer Platz and Brandenburger Tor also lie on the line S2. Karow is the perfect departure point for an excursion to the urban jungle during your city trip.

"The beds were super comfy and the rooms were modest, but clean. Check in wasn’t smooth: the self check-in kiosk didn’t work, but then I queued for 10-15min while a clerk took a phone call, despite being called forward to the desk. The restaurant was average really. The soup ordered arrived tepid ..."

A good choice.
"The Scandic is generally a good choice. We travelled with our two kids and booked a room with bunk bed for the little ones. The room was spacious and clean. As the hotel name suggested we expected Scandic design, which we like. However, we could have done without the IKEA quality as some of the furniture ..."
