Explore the social, religious, political and natural history of the Šariš region at the fascinating ŠarišMuseum. Browse hundreds of exhibits which are spread out in some of Bardejov’s centuries-old buildings, including the old town hall and medieval merchant homes.

The county of Šariš, now mostly contained within modern day Prešov, was once a crucial point on trade routes between Hungary and Poland. Some of this past, particularly the 15th and 16th centuries, is covered in displays in the Renaissance-era town hall on Bardejov Square. See old documents, military memorabilia, wood carvings and religious items.

Continue learning about Bardejov’s history at the burgher house number 27, also situated on the town square. The exhibitions here focus on religious icons. Admire the intricate details of the set of 16th-century wooden icons, marvel at the intact wall of icons and view embroidered religious vestments.

Leave the town square and stroll to nearby Rhodyho Street to find the museum’s Exposition of Natural Sciences. Study hundreds of plant and stuffed animal exhibits representing the flora and fauna of northeastern Slovakia. Among the exhibits are Slovak snails and a reticulated python.

The Šariš Museum also encompasses two other outposts. Both are located near the Bardejov Spa leisure complex north of the town center. Wander around the open-air Museum of Folk Architecture and inspect examples of old Slovakian structures, such as farm and religious buildings. Nearby is the Exposition of Folk Lore, which is housed in the historic Villa Rákoczi. It features culturally significant items such as dresses and handicrafts.

The old town hall and icon exhibition are both in Bardejov Square, a short walk from the town’s train station. Find the Exposition of Natural Sciences just a 2-minute walk south of the square. To get to the Museum of Folk Architecture and the Exposition of Folk Lore, drive north from Bardejov for about 10 minutes.

Museum opening times vary depending on the season, so check the ŠarišMuseum’s website before planning your visit. The website also has details of admission charges.
