Nijmegen claims to be the oldest city in the Netherlands and celebrated its 2000st anniversary in 2005. Nijmegen was once the biggest Roman city in the Netherlands. You can still visit a number of buildings that date back to the Middle Ages. Part of the old city walls are also still intact.
Look out over the city from the 14th-century St Stevenskerk, visit castles such as Batenburg and Kasteel Doorwerth and stroll through the oldest shopping street in the Netherlands: Lange Hezelstraat. There are also a number of interesting museums, such as Museum het Valkhof, which is home to Roman art. Playground Leemkuil or the famous Ouwehands Dierenpark in nearby Rhenen are great places to take the kids.
You can explore Nijmegen on foot or by city bus. Stroll along the Waal promenade near the city centre and go shopping. In summer, stop at one of the sidewalk cafés at Koningsplein or Grote Markt for a drink or a delicious meal. The city centre is pedestrianised, making it easy to explore on foot.
Nijmegen is easy to reach by train from a number of Dutch cities. Get off the train at Nijmegen Central Station and explore the city centre on foot. If you’re travelling by car and coming from the south of the Netherlands, take the A73. If you’re travelling from the north, follow the motorways that take you through Arnhem. You can park near the city centre in one of the parking garages.
