Thanks to its beautiful architecture, museums, proximity to the sea and lovely shopping area, Middelburg is the perfect city destination. Whether you're in Middelburg with the kids or friends or just want to spend a romantic weekend with your partner, Middelburg has something for everyone.
Middelburg was granted town privileges at the beginning of the 13th century. Fortifications were built over the centuries and if you look at a map of the city today you’ll see the star shape of the canal that once protected the city.
One of the city gates in Middelburg survived, the Koepoort. Its Baroque architecture is a great relic of the city’s past. Middelburg's old city hall is another impressive building. It dates back to the 15th century and is something you will absolutely want a photo of!
Abdijtoren de Lange Jan is a great place to get an overview of the city. Climb the 207 steps for a fantastic view and recover with a drink at one of the cafés in the market square, which dates back to the 13th century.
Families with children should visit Mini Mundi, a theme park on the edge of the city. You can see all kinds of miniature buildings from the region of Walcheren and there's also a big playground for the kids. There are also a few nice beaches, such as Nollestrand in Vlissingen and De Hoge Hilt in Zoutelande.
The city itself and the surrounding area are easy to explore on foot or by bicycle. Why not spend a day at the beach with the kids? If you're travelling by car, you can park on the street or in one of the parking garages for a fee. If you prefer something cheaper, you can park at the (P+R) parking lot.
Middelburg has a train station but it's easier and quicker to get there by car.
Enjoy Middelburg's cultural history and great atmosphere during a weekend away.
