Chapel of the Sacred Heart

Chapel of the Sacred Heart featuring wild flowers and a lake or waterhole
Sitting peacefully on the banks of Jackson Lake, this log church offers views of the soaring peaks of Grand Teton National Park.

Enjoy the serene atmosphere and postcard-perfect panoramas at the Chapel of the Sacred Heart. This small wooden church overlooks the southeastern shores of Jackson Lake. It dates back to 1937, when it was built with funds donated to the Catholic Extension Society, an organization that builds and supports remote churches. The Chapel of the Sacred Heart was rebuilt in the 1960s and refurbished in 2002.

The chapel building is constructed entirely of logs and displays similarities to a mountain log cabin. Inside, all furnishings and decorations, from the altar to the pews and the wall décor, are also made from wood. Look for woodcarvings of Jesus and other biblical characters. Behind the altar is a colorful stained-glass window.

During the summer, join the local community that gathers for Mass services here. A mix of park workers and visitors line the pews, with seating capacity for 115 people. Wedding ceremonies often take place within the pretty church too.

A trail leads from the front of the chapel down to the lake’s pebbly waterfront. Sit for a while and gaze over the calm, glistening water. See Donoho Point, one of over 15 islands scattered around the lake.

Look west to spot some of the huge mountains of Grand Teton National Park. Among them are Doane Peak, Eagles Rest Peak and the 12,605-foot-tall (3,842-meter) Mount Moran. On clear and sunny days they create mirror images in the water.

The chapel is about 9 miles (15 kilometers) south of Colter Bay Village and 26 miles (42 kilometers) north of Teton Village. Park in the large lot adjacent to the church. Signal Mountain Campground is just a 20-minute walk away. If you have a car, drive to the nearby Jackson Lake Overlook on Signal Mountain for additional magnificent views.

Visit the Chapel of the Sacred Heart and enjoy its scenery year-round. Mass services are held from June to September. Look for the schedule listed in the Grand Teton National Park newsletter, which is available at the park’s entrance gates and online.
