Sandnessjøen is situated in Helgeland, Nordland and is known as the home of one of the protagonists in the masterful Icelandic saga ‘Egil's saga’. The town is dubbed the ‘Gateway to Helgeland’ and acts as the departure point for several islands.
Along the Helgeland coast, you will find a unique mountain formation, De syv søstre. The formation consists of seven peaks and was named ‘the Seven Sisters’ by the poet Petter Dass. The mountain range is easily accessible from FV17, approximately 3,200 feet above sea level. If you take the tourist routes, you can easily reach one of the peaks and if you arrive by sea you will see the mountain range as you sail into Sandnessjøen.
Sandnessjøen is known for having one of the best-documented histories from the Viking era. Visitors can travel back in time to Torolvstein –a longhouse situated immediately outside the town centre. Here you can listen to Viking stories, eat Viking food and peruse the exhibitions. Also visit Alstahaug Museum and the medieval Alstahaug Church. The museum is situated at the old rectory, where you can see the exhibitions, enjoy traditional food and learn more about the life of one of the country's foremost poets.
If you are after a more active holiday, you should experience the coast from a kayak. Helgeland is the ultimate paradise for paddling and Tømmervika Opplevelsessenter offers activities at sea, at heights and on the ground.
