We were quite confused arriving to the property. We were aware there was no check-in, but there were no signs or guidance on which room to take. There were two open rooms so we just picked the bigger one. 'Complimentary breakfast' was jars of old cereal and expired yoghurt. There were no mugs, cups, bowls or cutlery to eat even if we wanted to so we didn't even make a tea/coffee. The room was clean and cosy, which was good; however we will not be returning.

We booked both rooms. The rooms are okay and clean. Felt a bit aged and hadn’t been used for a while. Instructions are minimal, and shampoo is missing in 1 room, the same room the 1 ceiling light was broken. I guess if you are tired after the bike trail for a stopover, you may not care that much, but not an ideal place to relax.
We couldn’t really cook or BBQ here. The outdoor area showed in the picture was not readily available. Had to ask and the owner came back in a few hours to connect the gas. Borrowed us a pan and a pot, but there was no water/sink, chopping board and other utensils, so didn’t feel invited to use that area. Outdoor bath was of course covered. Washing machine was constantly in use by the owner. When we came, clothes were hanging in front of one of the room entrance. We literally stayed in someone’s backyard and also felt that way, not so welcoming.
We asked if we could charge our EV and got refused. This is fine, but all the other accommodations we stayed had allowed to us to do that. So we felt more differences in hospitality. The owner didn’t try to assess how much power it may be used, just a straight no. Charging from a domestic plug is very slow and wont used much compared to what we paired over $400 for both rooms. All we wished was to save us an hour to reach Dunedin to recharge.
Nice rural outlook. Quiet and clean. Unfortunately, other guests took our room, left their stuff, locked the door, and went away for the day. We ended in the less scenic room, without the sofa nor table. Owners apologized for the blunder. The family was very busy, as this is the lambing season and bad weather was on the way. The breakfast was just cereal on the second day. Lucky to have caught them on the way out to the paddocks to ask for the basics like milk. No bread despite jam and butter packets being provided in the room (first day got freshlt baked bread slices).
Although it was a chilly night, the room stayed toasty. Unfortunately, it was too cold and too windy to enjoy the outdoors whirlpool. It must be nice to have a dip on a nice warm evening. Best, we got to see a newborn lamb being fed and were greeted by a sweet purring 3-legged puss. It's great that we could bring our dog with us. The owners have 2 well behaved dogs, on top of the working dogs. All are pretty quiet and friendly.
Nice time of the year to see azalea and cherry blossoms in Central.
The owners are right in recommending the pub in Naseby, over the one in the Ranfurly hotel which was really empty. The dinner prices are steep for what was on offer. Food in Naseby tastes very good while the cafe in Ranfurly township has very tasty friands and good coffee. Well preserved train station and a charming small town museum focusing on the art deco period. Some interesting historic buildings to see.
This is a bnb, not a hotel, and that is the charm for me. You are staying with a family, complete with home-cooked bread (yum!) and, when I returned home, an ecstatic toddler who had locked mum out of the truck.
Hotels are the same everywhere - troutntrail is life in New Zealand.
