Interesting experience sleeping within prison walls. Loved the room - atmospheric. Interactions with staff was businesslike rather than warm. They did their job but with no extras.. all in all very pleasant but not totally worth the money.

Unique property in great location. Sadly, my room was stuffy and poorly ventilated and no way to adjust temperature. Housekeeping brought me a rickety old fan that barely worked to mitigate. Not exactly what one would expect at a high end property. Staff were lovely.

The staff, overall, were very helpful and polite. Only one reception member seemed less than impressed with our issue regarding the heat of the room. The hidden service charges when charging to the room are steep. To have a meal and get a service charge for that is acceptable, however, for then being charged a separate service charge of £7.50 for drinks during the same meal is an example of the hidden charges not disclosed when booking.
The food was not great but this was due to there being no head chef. This would’ve been acceptable if we’d been told in advance. We were only notified that they were “struggling” due to not having a Head Chef during the meal. The potato products were undercooked and overall the food was mediocre.
The room was well equipped but very dark with poor lighting. It was also exceptionally hot and the fans did not work due to sockets not working in the room.
Two nights cost us £1000, this included parking and breakfast, one meal and some drinks. Oxford is a lovely city, you could get the same for a lot less!
Beware. Some, perhaps many, of the rooms are not air conditioned, and because of the hotels past as a prison (and because it is a listed building) the windows are very small. My windows did not open and I relied on a skylight for fresh air.
I spent a totally sleepless night in a room (the Thomas Smith room in the Governor’s house) that was much too warm and had no air. I was moved the next morning, after I complained, but never should have been put in that room in the first place.
Do not book a room during the summer unless you are assured the room is air conditioned.
We booked this property because it was centrally located, had car parking and looked interesting. It was certainly interesting as it was a former18th century prison and part of the old castle. Cells have been converted to first class accommodation with the original iron stairs and walkways retained.Great fun.
The staff were first class from the gentleman who met us at the door and took care of our car, to the receptionist who checked us in, and everyone else we had contact with. Well done.
Although it would not affect our five star rating, there were some minor issues which should perhaps be addressed.
* Some drawer storage in the room would be helpful.
* A shelf or small shelving unit is necessary in the bathroom.
* A small fridge would be welcome.
Much enjoyed, and we would certainly highly recommend Malmaison. We hope to return at some stage.
Thank you.

Staff were good and helpful especially the parking valet. Our room was above the Slug and Lettuce and was noisy. Bathroom was tired and the shower leaked. Food was mediocre. Will not rush back.
As usual, the Malmaison is a very good choice, being in the City Center, near to busses, restaurants, bookshops and libraries, other shops. Rooms are quiet, large, clean. Personnel is kind and professional.
Really enjoyed stay. Lovely interesting property. Very friendly staff both on reception, bar and restaurant. Great food. Close to station and easy access to Oxford city centre.
Smooth check in, great service throughout our stay. It was my partner’s 50th birthday so we booked a junior suite which was stunning. The hotel has a great atmosphere, breakfast was delicious. Thanks Malmaison for a great stay!
The former prison has been repurposed in a careful refit, retaining many of the original features. The venue is very clean and the staff were very good.
Breakfast was of good quality too.
We chose to park and ride, as parking is limited and relatively expensive.
Location and building was great. Ideal location for walking to sights. Unique experience.
Dinner menu limited.very high steak supplement. Service charge on cocktails. More description on dessert ingredients required.
Breakfast muffins were hard.
Room was cold on arrival and plumbing a little erratic. Also a constant plant room humming in the room all night.
The staff in all departments are very friendly and welcoming, can’t fault it at all. Went for the breakfast included option which was outstanding and again the serving staff was all very friendly and helpful. The only reason it gets four stars from me is because I had to change room on the first night. They checked me into a room below where a function was being held. The staff member dealt with the situation and changed my room, overall this could have been avoided if I was not given the room in the first place knowing a function was being held there.
