Have stayed here before and it was excellent, stay, food very good.
Very different now quite stark due to Covid 19 restrictions and no restaurant working. Breakfast in a paper bag outside your door with rather sad contents.
Little ambience sadly.
We had the best time at this location, beautiful setting and service, staff were so so lovely, we plan to go there again. Absolutely chuffed with our stay.
Was apprehensive after seeing some mid range reviews, but we didn’t encounter any issues
Rooms were spacious and clean, check in was easy, and locations lovely.
Grounds are well kept, and staff very helpful
its a shame that the swimming pool was sold off and no use of the jacuzzi, I came here thirteen years ago with my partner, but felt disappointed with lack of spa facilities
A stunning building and all staff were excellent and very friendly. Sam at reception even printed off some crosswords for us at our request.

Meh! Average hotel
Not so amazing. Hotel lacks character or any atmosphere. Originally got a room just above reception which smelt like the open fires they had downstairs, I opened the windows to air the room and when I tried to close the window it fell apart exposing the sharp glass because the frame was so rotten. We were given a new room which was far nicer although much smaller - very pleased though as they had several Christmas parties whilst we were there and the original room would have been very noisy with merry people shouting! Hotel felt quite dated on the whole, the original room we were give (25) was particularly so and seemed quite dirty but new room better. Didn’t eat here and didn’t have any desire to either to be honest. Good location for Oxford and Newbury though. Went to The Red House nearby for dinner which was nice. The hotel have what looks like a lovely pool - and the reason we booked but later discovered that it’s been sold off and you’re not able to use this, the gym is a room which was closed too.
On the whole, for the price - I’d say the location was good, free parking too. But wouldn’t stay again. I’d paid the £10-20 extra for a different hotel with an atmosphere, cleaner, up to date with more facilities.
Be warned the lane from the road to the hotel is very rough, with plenty of potholes and rubble in the road.
Gostámos muito. Em especial os empregados. Eram todos muito simpáticos e solícitos. O edifício é muito giro. A parte antiga é muito bonita.

Nice stay but communal areas need a good clean
On the face of it lovely hotel with gorgeous setting. Staff were very helpful but in short supply when there was a wedding on. Rooms were clean but very old creaky building so you hear everyone walking about overhead and in the hallways. Nice shower and clean bathroom. Net curtains torn and room a little cooler on the old fashioned side. For the price however it is what you’d expect altho I did get a good rate for booking early. Problem with the kitchen meant we couldn’t order any hot food for dinner other than pizzas (over priced) or sandwiches. Breakfast room offered nice view outside but the dirty glass roof as did the cobwebs ms dead flies hanging from the chandeliers!

Room 34
the hotel itself looked nice and was reasonabley priced for a last minute booking , I stayed in room 34 which is Twin bed - that was okay. unfortunately I didn't get much sleep because of a generator right outside the bedroom window. I did tell the reception on checking out but couldn't stay to sort due to another appointment elsewhere They didn't have tea / coffee ready in the room either as had to ask on reception. . he grounds were lovely and peaceful though although the secret garden area and old tennis court part looks like is in need of some TLC as looks old and tired. If I were to stay again it will have to be booked earlier in hope of getting a better allocation.

Wedding stay
Had an overnight stay during a recent wedding. Hotel and grounds are lovely as are the staff. Food was good . Drinks pricey.
The room we stayed in was comfortable and quiet but a little dated. Hotel and lobby etc very nice, need to spend some attention to the rooms.

Adequate and a fair price
The place is a bit tired and the staff were a bit vacant. Breakfast was pretty good.
Family wedding fantastic venue and service throughout our stay. Only small complaint it wasn’t clear that the tea and coffee making equipment was under the machine.

Delightful place but very tired, could well do with a refresh
Where do i start?! All the negative reviews on here are SOOO true.
1. The hotel smells of a hospital
2. No staff in sight to help with anything - MASSIVELY understaffed
3. Useless staff... none of them are helpful
4. You have to pay £5 to get room serve!!! Never in my life have i encountered this! We were 20 seconds away from the kitchen and main foye...
5. NOTHING is free here... theyll take every penby they can from you
6. We were placed right in the stairwell DISPUTE there being a hundred other room.
7. Every night, all we smelt in our room with FISH from the kitchen area. MADE ME WANT TO VOMIT!
8. When asked how far the town is from here and that we wouldn't be joining them from any meals, a manager or wannabe manager, gave us the most sarcastic comments on how far it is stormed off. TOWN IS A 10MIN DRIVE BTW. The best thing we ever did was not eat at hotel!
9. The "gym" is the size of a tiny box room! You dont see any gym pics on their website and theres a good reason why!
10. The pool isnt even theres and access to the pool is impossible. Staff are clueless and have no interest in even trying to accommodate your needs.
We came to this place for a Valentine's weekend and it was certainly one to remember, in all the wrong ways!! We travelled over 110 miles each way for this dump and its the biggest mistake we made.
I'D LIKE MY PETROL MONEY FROM THEM AS COMPENSATION!?
Save your money people and stay away!!
Having read the reviews of the hotel prior to our visit. I was in fact very surprised to find it of a high standard in all areas. Great visit we had our small dog which was given a very warm wellcome

Room very dated and shabby with wallpaper peeling and cracks in the ceiling, even had a plant growing in through the window!
At breakfast there was no cutlery on the tables, there wasn’t any bacon and on asking the waitress said it would be 2 mins, another 5 mins later asked again and the waitress very rudely said “we have only got one chef” I was quite taken aback by her response.
There was a wedding on and I feel that priority was given to that for everything, which really shouldn’t be as we are all paying guests. Such a shame as a beautiful location, I feel they are charging a lot for what is provided compared to other hotels. Definitely would not put it as a four star.

Was probably a lovey hotel-in 1986
A lovely location, but that’s where it ends. We were in the Mews rooms which were terrible - small, really dated decor, chipped paint, tired looking rooms and translucent towels.

Nice rooms, comfy beds, great location, nice staff
Nice rooms, comfy beds, decor dated - but it's a period building so to be expected, great location and friendly staff. Lots of choice at Breakfast.
Check-in was a little rushed and not a lot of information given to us (Eg. what time for breakfast, check-out time etc) but there we arrived in the middle of a wedding going on so we understood!
Lovely hotel with wonderful views. Friendly staff, especially Lubo who was nice to chat to and very knowledgeable about wine and the extensive gin selection. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the duvet incredibly fluffy. Would recommend.
