New Aquarium Zaragoza

Zaragoza
Observe thousands of fish and other animals at close quarters that are found in and around rivers throughout the world.

The New Aquarium Zaragoza lays claim to being Europe’s largest river aquarium and is home to more than 350 species of fish, reptiles and amphibians from five of the world’s most important rivers. Visit New Aquarium Zaragoza to observe a variety of aquatic wonders and learn about their lives in galleries that imitate each river's ecosystem.

The aquarium’s tanks are spread across themed areas that represent the five rivers, which are the Amazon, Nile, Mekong, Ebro and Murray-Darling. Start your aquarium visit in the Nile River section which begins with a recreation of the mountainous African region that is the river’s source. Observe numerous species including Nile crocodiles, African nail frogs and freshwater pufferfish.

Study the tanks that represent several sections of the Mekong River which is the largest in Southeast Asia. Among the animals you can see here are archer fish, harlequins and Asian tortoises. In the Amazon River themed area find representative ecosystems, including mangrove forests, of this South American river. See reptiles such as mata-mata turtles and fish species that include the red-bellied piranha.

Look into the aquarium's central tank which is 30 feet (9 meters) deep and see pacu fish that are native to the Amazon River and Malay sharks that are native to the Mekong River. View Australian tree frogs, snake-necked turtles and clownfish in the Murray-Darling River zone. Conclude your visit at the tanks dedicated to the Iberian Peninsula's Ebro River.

The New Aquarium Zaragoza is located on the site of the 2008 International Exposition of Zaragoza, about an 8-minute walk from Zaragoza-Delicias railway station and approximately 2.6 miles (4.7 kilometers) from the old town. If you are traveling by car, there are free and paid parking options within a short walk of the aquatic attraction.

The aquarium is open every day except for Christmas Day and New Year's Day and admission charges apply. Discounts are available for children and adults over the age of 65.

When leaving the aquarium pause for a few moments to marvel at the waterfalls that are cascading down the façades of the building.
